I'm a horrible Mummy and Ali is far too honest...

My McTimoney lady came out earlier today, I just wanted her to come as a "check-up" as I hadn't felt anything wrong with Ali recently but I wanted to put my mind at ease.

I was absolutely shocked when she said his pelvis was out of place. He had been such a star these past few months and he had been jumping so well; that just shows how honest he is

So whilst she was putting it back into place you could obviously see Ali was in pain, but he's such a dote and let her work away. He always knows when someone's trying to help him.

I had to give him bute as he's very sore now, and he has to be stabled for a few days with very little bedding as if he rolls he could put his pelvis out of place again.

I have to do various stretches with him daily, and in a few days I have to start riding him out on the roads in walk firstly (I'm only allowed to ride in straight lines and turn clockwise with him for the first couple of days). About a week afterwards I'm allowed to gradually introduce trot (allowing him to stretch down and out) and lateral work. And then in two weeks I'm allowed to canter as well and start bringing him back into proper work. I'm going to have to withdraw from the DI event next weekend, but TBH I couldn't care less.

I just feel so horrible and cruel to have competed and schooled him when his pelvis was out of place

I'm sure if he was in a lot of pain he would have let you know. My horse is always quick to point out if he's not feeling tip-top! If he wasn't showing any particular signs how were you to know? You've got it fixed now, that's the main thing

BTW he looks gorgeous in your sig

I hope he is feeling better, but im sorry if a horses pelvis was out of place you would need a CRANE to shift it with the strength of the muscles and ligaments that hold it in place.........

lexiedhb - whatever you want to call it - misalignment, out of place, unlevel - it does happen. I had my horses done this week and I could see when he was standing square, his pelvis on one side was a couple of inches lower than on the other side. Now it is nice and straight.

I've also had my own pelvis realigned.

Yes I believe that a human could have their pelvis realigned, as they are not half a ton of strength to work against........ maybe it is just the terminology that sits very uncomfortably with me........

My horse had his pelvis realigned by my McTimoney person too, seems quite common :s It was just after i'd brought him, and he used to hunt, so due to jumping I would guess.
He was well behaved before it too.....but naughty now... might have to whack it back out of place!! (joke- before anyone shouts at me :s)

Whilst it is good he has been seen to, I don;t see how it could be fixed in just one go? Like has already been said, there are lots of muscles and ligaments involved. My mum has alignment issues and had to have regular physio appointments to sort it, not just a one off.

I am not saying that they haven't done any good, just that how on earth can they fix it that fast? and surely being made to stand still and not walk about is going to make him seize up a bit?

also Noone one is totally symetrical, so how does anyone know what is normal for each horse/person? especially without any pain?

I was totally with you on this one til i met a woman who does McTimoney and she converted me. She told me as much as they make these statements they on no way manipulate the actual bones!

It's more a case of the muscles are tight which pulls the pelvis out of line, she works on the muscles around the area and sort of 'unknot's them.

I've seen great results with her working on other peoples horse. Unfortunatley UI can't afford £40 to get my back sorted so I ain't paying £40 to see if my girl might or might not have a slightly out pelvis. I'm a terrible mother, I admit it!

Thank you JumpTheMoon

The McTimoney lady I'm using is highly respected throughout the country, and several top riders use her. She said Ali might or might not need another session in about 2 - 3 weeks

Yeah i think it might just be the terminology........ if they said "the muscles in the left flank are tight, causing an unevenness" I would be more inclined to believe that could be fixed than "your horses pelvis is out of place!!"

They also come back in a week or two to makesure everything is still in the correct place, as muscles can pull back to where they have been, and horse is used to that way of going, so they return to check it hasn't all gone back to how it was before

No problem CM

I'm a major McTimoney supporter

lexiedhb - it's not a question of strength - that's the beauty of McTimoney. Everything they do is with small movements, quite similar to Bowen Therapy.

I don't know exactly how they do it, as I haven't trained in it (;)) but I have seen with my own eyes the pelvis being unlevel, then after treatment it is level. I have also noticed HUGE differences in the horses work.

Yep and thats fine, if you believe in it and it has worked for you and your horses than great!

Doesnt mean i will ever be convinced that a human can "realign" a horses pelvis ........ manipulate muscles yes, which may eleviate unevenness sure, but realign something that is held in place with such strong muscles and ligaments and connective tissue.......... nope not convinced!

My old horse's pelvis was out of alignment too and corrected through McT-C. I know the skeleton wasn't literally out of alignment but the muscles that held the bones were.

I'd previously had numerous well respected and recommended physios to my horse, saddlers, custom made saddle and a stay in the vet school for investigation and no one found anything.

By chance a McT-C woman was on my yard and she spotted the problem straight away. As soon as it was pointed out it became the most obvious thing. My mare ended up with some time off then ages long reining and pole work to bring her back correctly and evenly.

I use McT-C on all my horses now. touch wood my mob are ok but still get 6mth check ups. I was thank impressed I'm now training in it so hopefully come Aug 09 I'll be qualified and able to answer questions like this better! lol

Thank goodness............... thought I was going a bit nuts for a mo!!

Im not saying it doesnt work for some people, but I really think they need to alter their terminology drastically!

My Vet agrees with you lexiedhb....

As do mine! I personally wouldn't let someone with a lack of qualifications do anything to my horse.

... and mine!!

My vet will also advocate a physio over mctimmoney although he will not stand there and downplay them he just feels physio is more qualifiied.

Also: the comment above about how they even come back out a week later to check: dont forget they charge for that lovely call back!

I use both so im not condemning a mctimoney, but i do smile when people say 'my horses pelvis was out of place etc'
Even my mctimoney lady smiles when she hears it!

My parents(doctors) both agree with the no such thing.
IMO the only worthwhile person to use is a fully qualified equine physiotherapist.
As any 'cracks' etc is rubbish, never mind pelvis being out of place..you only have to study the anatomy!

So is this post turning into mctimoney bashing then
tongue.gif

FWIW I believe it does have it's place but preferably when it's combined with sports massage to back it up.

Clearly though, if your horse is lame / obviously in pain the VET should be the first person you call......

As do mine Lexie - as do I, Lol!! Of course humans can't possibly MOVE horse bones; sheesh.

Massaging muscles is quite different and over time can be therapeutic.

It most certainly isn't turning into McT bashing. I have used a McT chiro for years. She releases a trapped nerve in \Sienna's shoulder. Just cannot believe the nonsense so many back people come out with or that people are a. so gullible & b. so determined to defend the nonsense....

Agree to the above.

Don't beat yourself up craitureen, if he wasn't able to do anything, or he was in pain, he wouldn't have let you compete, or school, him!
