Well this is round 2
Me and storm went out for a ride Saturday , being lead by a friend . As I was told he wouldn't hack out alone . Thought I was covering all basses .
But how wrong was I storm reared up twice .
What should I do , how do I stop him from doing this .

Sorry I need help with my storm ....... I've researched online and a lot of equestrian site say you should sell a rearing horse , I want storm to stay with me but as I'm a newbie how am I going to stop him from rearing whilst I'm riding him . HELP PLEASE

No I don't have a martingale on him . He has also done it whilst being led out to his field , he has seen a vet and he gave him the thumbs up nothing wrong with him .

Thanks Hunni for your reply much appreciated

My mare used to rear alot, she now hardly ever rears.

Please don't try to smash eggs or water baloons on your horse's head.

You need to work out why your horse rears. Is he frightened? Are you riding with heavy hands? Is he trying to get out of work?

Always put a neckstrap (a running martingale works fine) on a rearer as you can slip a few fingers under it. This will stop you pulling on his mouth if he does go up.

I think it's because he doesn't want to work because as soon as I asked him to go forward ,his tail started swinging like he was mad then he started to shake his head then went rodeo style , he has totally frightened me

You quite correct on that one faracat

OK, so he doesn't want to go forwards. That's the same as my mare.

She would nap and rear if we needed to go past something scary. She also tried the whip around and reversing.

With her I only ever do circular routes. I never ever turn around and go back the way we came.

It's possible that your horse needs more confidence.

Do some work in-hand in your field/school.

Build up to walking a short circular route in-hand.

Then ride the route with a helper walking with you.

It's always worth checking that his saddle and bridle are comfortable. Also from reading your old posts, you haven't had him long. Do you have an experianced friend who can help you with him?

If he's better in company, can you try to arrange to ride out with another horse until your confidence improves?

Agree with faracat above, if you've been told he won't hack alone could you ride out with a friend with a sensible horse? Then maybe tackle riding out alone when you have had time to build up a bond?

He also doesn't like going out on his own , so how am I going to do a cicular route when he won't go out on his own , he is absolutely fine when he is within a group

I have a rearer . . . he only does it when he feels trapped/under pressure . . . my advice is NOT to bit your horse up, nor to put it in a standing martingale or any other contraption that will limit the ability to move forwards. Do NOT attempt to break eggs or water balloons or any other nonsense over his poll . . . just send him forward (can't rear if the hind end is truly engaged) and don't whatever you do hold onto his mouth.

Hack in company for now so you can build his confidence . . . don't overface him b/c otherwise he will continue to rear and may go over backwards.

Try long reining him . . . you are on the ground with him but behind him - which means he HAS to be in front but your presence still gives him confidence. I do this with my nappy boy. Also, try baby steps . . . ride him a very short distance away from the yard (even if it's 100 metres) and then let him go home (calmly) . . . next time 150 metres . . . and so on.

The reason I only do circular (or loops where I don't need to turn around on the spot, as if I was at a dead end) routes with my mare, is that I found that she remembered where we turned around and then we'd have a battle when I wanted her to walk past that spot.

I would never break balloons over his head or anything else that comes too mind , I think it's more of a confidence issue than anything else . After all he is a teenager and I do think he is pushing me to see how far he can take me , but my god he did put the frighteners on me that's for sure . It's took me this long to get him and I would never hurt him .

Thank you to everyone who has advised me on my boy .
Your advice is truly appreciated . Will let everyone no how things go

This is tension . . . he's telling you he is worried/tense and doesn't want to go forward. It isn't that he doesn't want to work . . . that would mean he is lazy - any horse willing to expend that much energy to get out of going forward is not lazy.

You need to build his confidence and get him to trust you.

I'm only talking about my mare here, but that would make her worse.

Imagine the scene...

Mare. 'but we turned round here yesterday'
Me. 'tough luck, walk on'
Mare. 'sod off, I'm going home'

Mare turns around, I turn her back. Mare rears, I kick on, mare reverses. I drop contact and wait for her to stop. I wait, then ask her to walk on, she does, then she stops etc... etc... until one of us gives in, which is always her because I'll get off and lead her for two miles if I need to, and she knows it. :p

When she naps at something scary, I am nicer to her ('good girl, walk on' etc..) and these days we go past 'eek' things 99% of the time with no fuss.
