My pony has a clinging skin problem...

My gypsy cob has a huge thick winter coat, she was living out so we just gave her a chase clip leaving the thick coat (about 3 inch thick :eek::eek: ) on the top.

She's now in a stable over night but i hear its too late to give her a full clip (?)

but she has these patches that look like rain rot.. a huge one on one side and i just found another on the other side..

i have hibi scrubbed, used vaseline, used sudacrem, the hair is growing back but more is falling out in scabs.. i just dont know what else to do, when i wash it just doesnt seem to be getting down to her skin cus of her mass of hair.

she started to shed now but its gunna be a while before her summer coat is there and im scared more is gunna come off.

Any suggestions about what to do?? if i could just Full clip her i would right now then at least i can get down to her skin..

When they say is ruins their summer coat what does that mean? at this rate she wont have one!!

shes been on the same mix for 4 months, its Alfa A with oil and Pals conditioning mix.. ill find out whats in that when i get to the yard tonight, im not sure what the mix is :/

is it likely to be a diet problem?
 
Has she always had Alfalfa in her feed? One of mine is intolerant to it and I've heard others can get very itchy.

The first pic looks like a fungal infection, to me, but really a vet needs to see it, especially if it's spreading and oozing.

If a clip will help treatment, then clip! The issue with clipping now is only that a clip line will appear in the summer coat. It doesn't mean they don't grow one. :)
 
No harm if you clip her out completley now!
I had to do this with my yearling last year after she got lice from doves roosting above her stable!
No damage to summer coat as it hadnt started to come through!
 
I still have a week or so of clipping left and some get clipped all year round so unless your doing top level showing I would clip so you can see what is going on under all the fluff :)

We just moved onto a new yard a week ago but she had the begining of it before we moved not the second one though, that is new she doesnt seem to be madly rubbing on walls or anything but she seems to like it if i scratch under her fluff!

the patched are on either side of her spine at the top of her back, but just under where a saddle would sit..

She hasnt, just the last 4 months when she started losing condition and it was recommended to me by a few people. may be worth looking at that then. I was getting to the stage where i rang the vet and they said to hibiscrub, which ive been doing :mad: so i may have to try again.

If the summer coat has a line i really dont care, i only care about seeing her better!! so thats what ill do, i had visions of her having no hair or something haha :rolleyes:

Patches along the topline (and where you describe) are typical of lice (according to my vet when my boy had it) - can you see anything crawling about (they hide pretty quick if you shine a light in so need to be stealthy). Worth checking for. I got rid with a combination of lice powder and coopers.

no, im not entirely sure she took it seriously when i got them to check a few weeks ago.

im going to swap vets to my friends as they have a much better reputation, i havnt needed mine a lot. hopefully try and clip her and get the vet out asap.

Thanks, ill do some research on that. i do think the way forward it to get under that fluff as see whats going on.. its unmanageable at the mo!
 
My friends pony had what looks like the exact same thing, she clipped her, hibi scrubbed her and then slapped on some castor and zinc cream. The issue was resolved fairly quickly. We think it was because her coat was so thick, when she got warm, sweaty and itchy the hair was just falling out. There was no feed changes or anything else to have caused the problem.

Sounds very possible, she is hot but cold! top is too thick bottom is too thin, murder really :rolleyes:
 
As above... clip it all off then you can see what your dealing with.

One of my horses had scabby bits on her a couple of years ago. Even though she was a tb, you couldnt really see what was going on underneath the hair. She got fully clipped, and it was so much easier to see where the problem was, and to apply the remedy. (Vet said iodine spray). I think it helped as well by getting air to the skin as well.

My horse had exactly the same problem OP and he was too hot, so I now just lightly rug or let him go without depending on weather and if ridden make sure clean numnahs are used and breathable ones..
 
Two of mine had something similar which whatever I did could not shift the scabs, they just kept coming back, tried washing with dermoline, hibiscrub, vaseline etc. Recently we moved house so they are in a new paddock now and as someone else posted this has cleared it up, just by co-incidence though and I know it's not necessarily possible to shift them. Also I wouldn't worry about clipping, this helped too and I have just finished my last ones for the season this week.

After hearing that i shouldn't clip from someone I'm glad it will be ok.

i certainly don't care for appearance when she's obviously sick!

mine had bald patches (no scabs)!.... and turned out to be some rarely found mite...

if it were mine - full clip and a skin scrape would be the way forward!

It's look fungal to me, abit similar to ringworm, you can buy anti-fungal dry shampoo from pets at home (you don't need to rinse it off just apply to the area, it's like a mousse), my mare had it and it cleared it right up within a week :)
 
When my daughters previous horse had similar patches my vet suggested trying Canistan cream whilst waiting for the skin scrap results . Its an anti-fungal cream - just dont tell the chemist you want it for a horse!
 
some interesting answers guys, and a lot to think about, thank you.

Gunna get the full clip done and then asses when i can see whats going on!

then i will try and look at what to do from there :)
