I'm confused about my new (expensive !!) hat !!!

Just treated myself to a nice new hat - a vented Whitaker one. Not because of the brand name, purely because it's the only (and I mean only!!) vented hat on the market that fits me !!

Have just discovered it only has the British and European Safety standards EN1384 and CE EN1384 1996.

Is that safe enough for light schooling and hacking ??

Oh really? For some reason I thought it had to have other standards for competing, shows what I know

Alot of shows require it to be PAS015 certified and if your a member of a rc/pc they usually do aswell .

Has it got a kitemark symbol inside it? A lot of show grounds require that.... Esp anything to do with PC. But for hacking you'll be fine.

All hats have to conform to the EN 1384 so yes it will be safe enough.

Hats that have been tested in this country carry an additional standard, so then the hat would have BS EN 1384. This is then suitable for pony club and BHS activities.

My horse is 27 so I only do light schooling and hacking - no shows or competing or anything. Was just a bit worried when I was looking at the safety standards as just because he's a golden oldie and we only do light work doesn't mean I can't be splatted on the floor !!

tbh id be surprised if the shop let you take it back anyway as they dont know if youve ridden in it and fallen off so therefore isnt safe to re-sell.

It looks like you will be fine though going by above posts!

Haven't taken the labels off yet, they are still attached to the chin strap - so unless I would have ridden in it looking like a complete numpty with the labels swinging from my face the shop would be pretty safe assuming I hadn't used it yet!

i asked and they said i could take it back if the labels were still on ........... but think I will be keeping it anyway
