I was always under the impression that because I passed my driving test after 1st Jan 1997 I would have to take a trailer test if I wanted to tow but I've just read somewhere that I can tow on a B license up to 3,500kg (combined weight) anything heavier then you have to take a B+E test.

So as long as trailer horse and car are less than 3,500kg, does that mean I need to take a test?

See post numbers 999 and 1000 of the TOWING CLINIC - link below in signature

Simple extra B licence towing rule for a trailer over 750 kgs plate MAM ....

Vehicle GVW added to trailer plated MAM must not be more than 3500 kgs

All other rules are the same for B and B+E towing

Thanks ROG, I'm still majorly confused as the weights just won't sink in to my tiny little brain :( but basically if I wanted say a Mondeo with an ifor 505 I'm going to need a B+E aren't I? :(

So, our Trooper weighs in at 2 tonne (weigh bridged) ..... the trailer is 800kg, and my horse is 450kg (weighed at vets). I passed my test after the 1st of Jan 1997. So total weight is 3250 ... does this mean i`m legal to tow with out taking my B+E ?

The licencing laws are not bothered about actual weights
Licencing laws go on what the potential legal weight can be when fully loaded

Vehicle GVW added to trailer plated MAM = ????? ..... more than 3500?

Ah ok not sure about the GVW ... and the trailer didn`t have a plate on when we bought it, it`s a 1970`s Richardson Rice, we had been in touch with Graham at RR near York, who narrowed down what we had with the serial number on the A-frame, however the trailer has been completely refurbed, and RR went out of business before we got the weight details for a new plate. How would you suggest we get it plated?

What is the GVW of your towing vehicle (Found on a metal plate in the door or in the engibe department)?
What is the MAM of the trailer (Found on the towing frame)?
If the GVW and the MAM weigh under 3.5 you are o.k
If not then you need to take the test.
(The MAM weight of the trailer must not be exceeded when loaded with the horse, water feed etc).

You cannot now get a plate for it so the total of all the tyre load ratings listed on each tyre will be deemed as the MAM with a max limit of 3500 kgs

I think RR might still be contactable for certain things such as spares so it might be possible they have access to records for your trailer as you have the serial number - worth a try maybe.....
