Hi All

A horse down the shack i go and help out at is desperatley poorly. It started with a swollen sheath, high temp and pale gums. The vet was called (perhaps 24 later than they should have!) and he was given some anti biotics and something for the swelling. He is also very depressed in my opinion.

He has shown every single sign apart from colic of encysted redworm. This week in the middle of his vet treatment he was wormed for encysted redworms. Today 12 hours after the wormer he has dioarreah and his sheath is more swollen (a little more) and he is still very down and feeling sorry for himself. His body temp has reduced.
The vet is called for Monday.
Funds at the yard are limited, he is not insured.

Im not sure why i am posting this. I just ... well i dont know... Anyone got any idea? similar story or anything that isnt the doom and gloom i am currently 100% filled with inside?

:( Sorry Scotslad, I don't have any experiences like what you are going through now,
but I just posted to say that 100% gloom does not leave much room for hope.
Hope and positive thoughts, good vibes and prayers (on their way to you from here )
Try to sleep so you are able to be of help tomorrow.
Teg x

Please tell me that the vet has given a sedative to make the horse drop his willy and check that out! The flies have been very bad this year and there have been numerous cases of fly eggs and then maggots both in sheaths and hooves. No need to wash out with harsh chemicals, just use a tissue to wipe out and inspect.
Mad to worm in the middle of this I would have thought - compromised health in some unknown way so not easy for the horse to cope with chemical dose of a wormer ( unless worms were shown to be its problem.)
I wish you luck and its only natural to care about a sick animal whether its yours or just one you have contact with. Good luck.

Good luck with him, fingers crossed for you that it's going to be ok.
Think positive thoughts, it might not be as awful as you think.
It's a good sign that there is no colic, and also positive that his temperature has reduced, that's a sign that the antibiotics are working.
I will be thinking of you tomorrow, please come back to give us an update after the vet has been!

have just had the vet out for similar(not sure where u r) but i was worried sick. turns out some fly had bitten my boy and hed had a reaction (on his sheath) an antihistamine jag and fuciderm cream soon cleared it up!
