Someone came to try a horse we have for sale today, it's been with us since birth so lots of pics to prove it's career, we were open about contacting our vet/PClub etc, and sent videos of it jumping XC and loads of pics of it SJ .
It's advertised as a possible tetrathlon horse, it has a totally unblemished record XC and has jumped round the Novice Intermediate track of a local BE, plus done numerous un-aff comps and virtually always in the prizes.
The chap wanted it for his two daughters who re reckoned were very capable riders at National Level .
CCj found him incredibly difficult to talk to on the phone so I rang him and talked for almost 25 mins answering every question with absolute honesty.
I found him probably the most suspicious person I've ever encoutered but understanding how some horse people tell fibs, I ignored it.
The original plan was try the horse here, but then C suggested we take her to the place she works which has a huge arena, better SJ and a XC course.
The potential purchasers agreed and off I drove this morning 30 plus miles in pouring rain.
I arrived less than 5 mins prior to them, they said they had followed me so they knew the horse was straight of the lorry. (ungroomed and wet I might add, but she looked ok).
Immediately the chap started being arsey with us, as if he didn't believe a word I said. then the owner of the yard said due to the heavy rain and the fact they have a BE running soon, sorry, we couldn't use the XC. Now I understood totally, as their own riders were about to box to another venue as their own gallops were under water.
The chap didn't, and got really unpleasant. We pointed out the arena is huge and we could build anything he liked to try her over, but he still went on at us. By now I was very embarrassed and C's trainer commented what a rude man he was.
At this point I got a bit shirty and said I wasn't in the habit of being anything but honest when selling my horses, that i had seen this one born and was not out to make a quick buck, just find her a good competitive home. I was terribly tempted to shove a cheque at him for his petrol money and say sod off if I'm honest, but he agreed to try her under pressure.
(oh I forgot, the YO at this point explained she had taken the mare to a local venue where she had personally witnessed it jumping all their Inermediate fences first go..., but he glared at her too.)
It was then suggested if they liked her we would drive her 20 mins away to see if another XC venue would allow us to use their jumps as their ground is better draining, so still peeved he agreed to that.
Well off they go in the pouring rain, C refuses to wear a jacket as she is already soaked.
TWO AND A HALF HOURS later they finished trying her.
It threw it down, theu saw her jump corners, enormous parallels, the girls both rode her, CCJ showed them how to ride her even better, and the little horse did exactly as we said she would.
By this time I am thinking I'm going to have to say enough, as the horse isn't fit.
Just then they finished, and he still refused to believe it would go Xc just as well as it SJ.
His daughter liked her and said she felt she would have no trouble competing her, but the younger daughter (oh yes I forgot to mention, he wanted a horse both could compete on) was a little warier, as it is a forward going sort and she was used to a cob.
He then said they liked her, but wanted to have her on trial .
They live 5 hours drive away it seems.
Now the ad says any trial here, but no way am I allowing total strangers to take a horse and try it.
He thanked us for our time , CCj stripped off right down to her underwear she was wet through, luckily we had spare clothes in the box. and off they went.
I feel sad because he obviously didn't believe a word any of us said; fed up because when you tell someone on the phone no trial away from home, why don't they realise I mean it, and worse still, because I loathed that chap instantly I met him!
His family were delightful, but at one point when he was being really obnoxious I asked him if he sold cars for a living as he clearly didn't believe a word I said.
At the end I asked the daughter if she thought the mare would do XC, and she was enthusiastic answering she was confident she was.
What was cringe making was there he was in front of a recent Badminton competitor, telling her there was no way you could tell if a horse would jump Xc by trying it in an arena.. His ignorance was breathtaking, in that arena is every type of simulated fence imaginable, from corners to skinnies...
The sad thing is were he to phone tonight and say he wants her, I think I would simply say no.. To him it wasn't a horse it was a machine, and that willing little horse deserves someone who appreciates her bravery and willingness.
ps he lives somewhere in Sooty's county....I think I'll organise a visit to tell him I am not a bloody rogue!!!

((((hugs)))) People are a pain in the a*se aren't they
mad.gif
She sounds like a fab horse so I'm sure she'll find the right home soon
smile.gif

bloody hell!!! I cant belive I read all that!!

And there is NO WAY I would even consider any offer he makes you!! IF he makes you an offer!!

What a complete numpty

He sounds awful, how rude esp as you had gone to so much trouble too.
frown.gif

You may have had a lucky escape though, imagine what he'd be like if he bought her and she put a foot wrong
crazy.gif

She sounds a lovely mare, hope you find a good home for her soon.

I was thinking about Hero the other day, do you still hear how he is getting on?

By the sounds of it you did very well to stay so calm. I'm afraid I think I would have told him to sod off!
She sounds like a fab little mare and I'm sure you'll find someone more deserving of her talents.

I woulndnt sell any of mine to him for love nore money!!! If your going to part with a horse that means allot ot you, you really have to be happy with the person your letting it go to. Horses are animals not machines, people like that dont deserve them!!! Rant over!! Good luck hun xxx

How rude!
I think you were more than reasonable you must be fuming, and understandably so.
I think I may pity the horse they get.
If they're that rude to people, what will they be like with a horse?

I have two friends looking for horses at the mo and one selling and I cannot believe the rubbish they are going through either going to see horses that aren't fit for the job or people expecting the world to be offered so they can buy your horse as a favour. Unbelievable and I think you were a saint for not telling him to go forth and multiply!!

Eurgh, you have every right to rant. You can be comforted in knowledge that he'll never find a horse that satisfies him & he will just continue to waste copious volumes of money in trying to find it! And TBH, I bet you'd feel worse if they actually brought her!

sootys county is my county also - and he sounds very much like a guy i witnessed being very rude to a friend that was selling - she wasnt so polite and told him where to go.
the kids looked mortified - i felt so sorry for them.

when we offered him tea he replied - "as long as your not going to lunge whilst im in the house"

the nerve...

WHat a horrible experience for you. Well done for not telling him to f off.

Awful person. I'd agree that you don't want to sell to him - I bet he'd be straight on the phone the first time the poor horse cleared her throat or lost a shoe.

Save her for someone nice!

What a nightmare! At least by not selling your lovely, genuine horse to them you know you aren't going to get sued the first time one of the kids comes off it because they rode a jump incorrectly. People like that don't deserve nice horses!

Sounds similar to the horrid old bint who came with her daughter when her friend was viewing my grey mare.
Mother *old hag* thought she knew it all. Daughter had ridden at JRN in ireland.
Because Bal had competed at PN she wanted to know how many points and wanted to see all fancy lateral work... FFS she was advertised as a great RC allrounder who had been placed in Intro/PN and pure dressage at Prelim/Nov unaffilated level.
She was so rude to me, friends at the yard were stood open mouthed with how she spoke.
This was a second viewing, as they had already decided to buy her.
Thank god horrid bint said she wasnt good enough for friend, Bal has a great home with RLF

i laughed - i didnt know what else to do!!

i wonder if it was the same idiot??

OMG!! What an ar$ehole

I know we all tend to be a bit suspicious when buying a horse but that is taking it way, way too far.

If he does ring you can always say you have had a better offer for her. Save your beautiful horse for someone that will appreciate her

At least the kids could ride.

The number of times the parents have told me their kids are perfect and they turn up and cannot ride is shocking.

Dont go to any effort to sell a horse- dont ever go out your way and dont ever plan ahead because it's not worth it. A good horse will sell to the right people when ridden in the field if needs be.

What an idiot - you were far more patient than I would have been, I'd have kicked him out long before you did. There is no need for that level (or any) of obnoxiousness when trying a horse - ultimately you were doing him the favour!! I seriously hope he reads this and recognises what an a*sehole he is!

Goodness me HH! I would have lost my temper after about 10 mins of that crap. And as for giving him a check for petrol and telling him to s*d off!! I should think you (or C's trainer) should be charging him for time and facilities used and wasted! Poor pony. Don't sell to that ar*ehole!

Do you feel any better having got that off your chest?
smile.gif

What a rude and objectionable man. When he rings to make a ridiculously low offer, tell him you wouldn't sell to him if he offered you three million and he was the last buyer on earth!

He's very lucky it wasn't me he'd come to buy off - I'd have decked him.
mad.gif

Agree with the others - I wouldn't sell to him even if he decides he does want the horse - he obviuosly doesn't deserve it! What a git! It must have been horrible for you - argh people are so obnoxious sometimes
mad.gif

Don't take any notice - it's not your fault your horse is far too good for him
smile.gif

What a horrible sounding man.
mad.gif
Although I must agree with him a little bit about the XC/SJ thing, as I would like to see a horse jump a ditch and go through water, which I presume is difficult to simulate in an arena, plus some horses do get much stronger out in the open than jumping in a school.

But still no need to be so obnoxious about the whole thing.
crazy.gif

I always feel dreadfull when i go to look at a horse because I dont like to put the vendor out! Thjat man sound like a completer w****r. Lets hope he catches a chill por something.

Some people are just . . . well, fill in your favourite unprintable insult here.

By the sounds of it you made a lucky escape though! As mentioned, even if they did you the fantastic favour of taking your horse on trial or, god forbid, actually giving you a pittance for it, they sound just the sort of people to scream and sic the lawyers on you when they made some disastrous decision and messed the poor horse up.

And as Boss said, at least the kids could ride a bit. There's nothing more fun than dealing with an obnoxious person who is also deluded as to their apparently remarkable resemblance in the saddle to Mark Todd.

A wretched day but at least you can take solace in the fact that you kept your temper and your little horse did everything asked of her under very trying circumstances. Sometimes all you get out of a viewing is the satisfaction of knowing you've done right by your horse.
smile.gif

Bloody hell, you are a better person than me! I am afraid the words starting in F and ending in the same would have come into effect very early on in our meeting. You sound a totally professional, honest person so hold you head up high and b******s to him! xxxx p.s. his loss

But we agreed to take the horse to another XC course which was actually on his way back home.
I also said if he would like to come back to our farm en route they could try it through the water here, which is sticky to say the least, it's a drop in off a car park, past an island in a huge pond with moorhens and ducks etc then a jump out onto a little bank.
Our builder is a tractor driver who hadn't a clue and made it more difficult that we'd ever planned.
He had a vid of it doing the Novice level XC, plus a pic of it sailing into the Intermediate, plus it's BE record of unblemished XC..
I would also expect to try a horse more than once no matter how far away they lived, and would have expected them to hack it, spend time in the box etc.
I know one thing, I would hate to be him; to see such bad in everyone he meets must be awful..
I must add I don't do hard sell at all. I tell them the replies to their questions and if anything, am too flipping honest.
His reply even though the girls were keen to try her round the other XC was he was too wet now to bother. I get the feeling even if they find one they adore, if he doesn't get the trial exactly as he wants he will walk away.
In this case we couldn't provide the on site XC and he thought we had set the whole scenario up to fool him, that was obvious..
Silly chap.

Don't feel sad ... be glad that he's made you even more determined to find a really nice home for your lovely mare! It sounds like she deserves to go to someone a million million times better than him. Well done for keeping your patience. Your mare has had a lucky escape.....
