I called the vet on Sat night because my horse had done something to his hind leg which was causing him pain and lameness. I got advice over the phone at the time rather than them coming out as back in May he did a similar thing that they thought was a pulled muscle and he was fine after a week on bute...this looks similar and is the same leg only worse this time. They said to wait until today and call them if no improvement.
I have called the vet out to come today because, whilst it was a bit better yesterday, today he is really hobbling. I am frightened to be honest about what it could be as there is nothing to see...no swelling, obvious heat, cuts, nothing.
He will weight bear on it and is eating normally and behaving normally. He has even lay down as normal in his stable at night. Perhaps he has just yanked something inside I dont know.
Has anyone else had this and what happened...perhaps the vet will refer him for some physio...but is physio successful on a cob who is in good condition? Can they get to the problem ok?
Sorry I am rambling because I am worried and waiting for the vet is awful when you don't know.

might be a caught nerve or something..if there is no swelling then not really too sure....doesnt sound like he has banged himself...might have just pulled something...
Try not to worry too much...im sure all will be fine..
thinking of you...

Until you see the vet its impossible to know what has happened - try not to panic or diagnose the problem yourself...just keep calm and seek comfort in the fact that the vet it on his/her way.

Fingers crossed for you.

What a load of fuss over nothing!!! Thank you for your kind words by the way...the vet found an abcess in his foot! So no major trauma after all! He is a lot happier now and plodding about with his duct tape 'slipper' on as it drains! Thanks...I feel a right silly worrier now!

I know exactly how you feel - Josh had an abcess a couple of months ago, I'd never had a horse with one before and he went totally lame with no heat and swelling, I did a MAJOR panic

Wierdly the abcess never showed itself when it drained, the farrier found a BIG hole but there was never any pus etc when I poulticed for god knows how many days

ETS - sorry, should have said, really glad your boy is going to be OK

Phew ..... abscesses can be treated successfully! Hope he makes a quick recovery. I'm sure we only have horses so we have something to worry about. Even if there's nothing wrong, I'm always looking for something!!

Glad you've found the cause and hopefully he will soon feel a lot better. I know how you felt though, I found our donkey unable to put his foot down earlier this year, he had never been lame in the 21 years we've had him. I had a major panic, convinced it was at least a broken leg. Turned out to be an abscess, he was in pain despite bute for quite a few days, in the end it broke out near the coronary band. Hope your boy makes a speedy recovery. Bless them, our animals are sent to worry us!
