Today was Day 1 of restricted grazing, 2011 version, for the Spooky Pony. Had just bought a new grazing muzzle---finally one that fits properly.

New grazing muzzle, ca. 1:30 pm :) :

Note ripped stitching, missing bit (well, you can't really note the missing bit, can you, on account of its being missing?), and velcro that is meant to give way, not having given way. AAAAAAAAAAARGH! THE LITTLE MONSTER!!!   :D

I think you should put that picture up for captions! mine would be "yeah yeah so you think this is stay on...."

Lol....sorry, but I had to chuckle when I saw the second pic! :D

I have a grazing muzzle for my shetland and it's turned into a bit of a game between me and my daughter as to whether it is still on him when we go down to bring them in. He's managed to bend the spring clip on it somehow, and he's worked out that if he rubs his head up and down against the wire fencing, eventually it will snag on it and then he can break free. I've watched him doing it! Many an evening, we've been walking the perimeter of the field in the dark trying to find the bledy thing!

I think if you'd looked at the sentiment in his eye in that first picture, you might've guessed how you would find your muzzle

That is one pee'd off looking pony :D:D.

Does he really get that fat? God, ours are a little on the trim side at the moment as not enough grass really - we're still feeding hay! They will go into another field in a week or so mind. Can'tyou just restrict the grazing area as opposed to putting the muzzle on? Mind you, to be honest if i was a horse I'd take it off too - I have to say i am not a fan of these muzzles. I know people like to use them and swear by them but I think I'd try other ways first.

I know I'm in the minority in my opinions on these by hey ho, it's my opinion.

I'm with you on that! Not a fan of the muzzles either. My NF is prone to balloon at even the sniff of new grass and is a connoisseur of escaping from his field but would much rather restrict the grazing and move the fencing every now and again than spend hours scouting the field for pieces of muzzle. :P

Naughty pony!!

I bought one of those for my lad and he just can't get used to it. I think i'm going to have to make the hole a bit bigger. When he has it on, mostly he just stands at the gate neighing and looking offended. The other day he did manage to have a drink with it on then stood there pretending that he was drowning... but then again, this is the horse who is frightened of snack balls so I shouldn't have expected anything else LOL!

I don't like them much either, I have to say. Yes, he's looked pregnant all winter (should I be charging admission to see the pregnant gelding?), and we had some LGL issues last summer. "Pony Jail" is the fatties paddock, which is fine if there's someone else in with him. I haven't worked out yet how to get a track system running on a livery yard!

Sod!!!

Our ISH and Shetland both have muzzles. ISH gives up and just wears his. The Shetland first dunks it in the trough and then rubs it into the floor and has decimated at least 3 so far!! We put duct tape across the bottom (not across the holes) to reinforce it.

Try putting a headcollar over the top and threading them through each other - stops them pulling them off/rubbing them off!!

At our yard, the geldings always manage to get their muzzles off and trample/hide/destroy them. One gelding is Accomplice Poneh and will actually pull them off other horses!

But the mares always manage to keep theirs on. Which proves that women are more worried about their weight than men! :p

Nice work Spooky:D:D:D

My mum doesn't bother with a muzzle or anything daft like that as I would just trash it:eek::D:D instead I am stuck on a bloody postage stamp from the end of February until about November when all the lovely grass has stopped growing:mad: I get fed hay and stupid chaff all year - and I shout a lot to remind everyone how much I suffer;):D - but it means I get to stay outside with my buddies and not inside in pony jail:rolleyes: it also stops me getting that lamb-in-tights that makes your toes hurt:o it's good for my waistline too - apparently mum didn't know coblets had ribs:eek: how rude:mad::mad:

Love The Coblet ;):D

Little monster :(

I was lucky last year as my field buddy thought the same way about grazing as me and we put up the paradise system in a 1 acre field after trying strip grazing and ending up using a lawnmower to cut the grass down!
I just need to get this year's field buddy to just give the system a go or I am not sure what I can do as her boy removes Shadow's muzzle within minutes :(

Last year, he was in an electric-fencing strip for a while with a mare...until he demolished the fencing while I was away, and led people a merry chase around the field. At least pony jail has a proper fence!

How did you install the system, and how many horses were on the track?

Completely agree. I hate muzzles. It's no wonder the pony wanted rid. Much kinder to keep him in a smaller grazing area. He looks very slim in the pics.

:D :D :D The two full-body pics in my siggy were taken last May, when he was very fit and had been in Pony Jail for most of the spring. At the moment, he looks as though he's about to give birth. To twins.

To those who don't follow the Spooky Pony's occasional irate posts on this board (don't quite know how he manages to type, but hey), "Pony Jail" does not refer to a stable, but to a no-grass paddock, where he spent most of last spring and last autumn with (often soaked) hay. This is fine when there are others on laminitis watch to keep him company, but the YM does not like him to be in there all the time, and at the moment, I seem to be the only one worried about the grass.

Electric fencing within his regular field does not seem to be an option: if he does not demolish it himself, there is a gelding in that field who will disassemble it by means of carefully grasping each post by the top, pulling it out of the ground, and laying it down.

The likeliest next step is Pony Jail during the day, Big Field at night. This will likely result in the pony trying (unsuccessfully) to bite me as I drag his rotundity down the path (since he's normally extremely polite, this serves as a demonstration of his extreme reluctance! :p ), but I don't see what else I can do.
