I'm getting a new dog tomorrow!!

I've been wanting a dog forever and i've actually been looking for one for some time now. I've been checking every rescue centre's website in my area every week and didn't seem to find the right one for me. However I have now found my ideal little dog who's owner needs to rehome her due to living on her own and having to work a lot more hours.

So tomorrow I am picking up an 8 month old spaniel cross who is just adorable! Any tips to do with introducing her to her new home/ training etc is very welcome! She can sit/ paw and is house trained & crate trained. Her recall could do with some work, its not awful but could be better. I am getting her bed & food etc with her as we all want to minimise stress etc for her.

Like i said, tips/ advice appreciated!!
 
I'd say she sounds like she will be a super dog...I'd set up your home as you mean to go on rather than as she was....so get your own routine for her sorted out,keep her on the same food to start,lots of walks to get to know each other and post loads of pics!
 
There will definitely be boundaries in place! She still puppy bites when she's excited but i've been looking in to the best way to train her not to do it :)

How exciting. My advice would be to find a good puppy class. We go training every week and we both love it.

I knew there was something i needed to ask! i've never been to any puppy/ dog training classes. what 'level' class should i take her to? she obviously knows more than 12 week old puppies but I'm not sure if the next 'level' up would be too advanced?
 
I'd chat with which ever training group you decide to join, and go from there.

We didn't actually do puppy training classes, because I didn't like the woman of the one I went to (once), and then couldn't find another to join - until I stumbled on this new trainer.

But knowing how much pleasure both Daisy and I get from our weekly sessions, I highly recommend going.

If you like training it might be worth doing gun dog training with her, even if you don't intend to work her as such.

Exactly this ^^ My trainer, who I found after two really wrong for the dog types, trains to the breed rather than generically. I did one on one training with her, having hated all the puppy classes I attended with both pups. My lot are trained as though they were working dogs, although they don't work. What it means, tho, is that they are incredibly obedient (mostly :rolleyes3:) and responsive. I'd say gun dog training is totally worth it.
 
I've never considered gundog training to be honest! We're not sure what breed she but i'd say cocker cross something. She knows sit/ paw and will come when you call her in the house, but in the garden is a bit more challenging! But it's obviously very early days.
I'll have a look into gun dog trainers in my area, but I'm also interested in clicker training. Any good videos/ books anyone could recommend?
 
If you do look for a gundog trainer, go for a spaniel person rather than a lab trainer. There are some nice friendly groups in Essex who do FT stuff, and last one I went to had all sorts of dogs there.
 
Gun dogs will be trained to the whistle. Bit more effective long range if her recall isn't stunning. Maybe consider a harness/longline so you can encourage her to return, big praise, treat, reinforce with the whistle if she's at a distance. I use a 50ft lunge line. Remember not to use a collar with a longline.

I've got a 50ft long line coming tomorrow and she already wears a harness but tbh i would like a better one. recommendations please?! she's got one of the cheapy pets at home mesh type ones at the mo
 
Mine's a TKMaxx find, Doglock or something. I only use it when taking puss cat out to the woods. I have seen rave reviews about the Julius K9 and everyone on the dog forum I frequent has them.
