Classic case of 'everyone has an opinion that's different to everyone elses and if you don't do it this way, you're going to be shot' on the yard at the moment...

So, I'm getting ver confused about clipping... Pony is getting quite sweaty when ridden and occasionally under his m/w rug when he's turned out. Has plenty of energy without being stupid (went off his head earlier in the year when he was fully clipped

) but is most definetly coming up rather on the soggy side whenever I do any work with him.

I've had just about every clip suggested to me that was ever invented, from full clipping to leaving him alone completely along with various stories saying that he'll get laminitis if he is clipped, laminitis if he isn't clipped, he'll grow his summer coat properly if he's clipped now, he'll have clip lines until August if he's clipped again now and wont grow a summer coat at all... the list goes on...

So, at the moment:

- he's getting very sweaty when he's ridden(neck/shoulders/hind legs)

- he was fully clipped back in october but went off his head a few days later...

- the weather is very mild (has been all winter so far) and I was riding in a t shirt at 5 o clock this evening...

- he's got plenty of energy at the moment

- it wouldn't kill him to lose some weight...

So, can anyone let me know what the pros/cons are of clipping at the moment are please! I'm getting really confused...

- If he's clipped now, will his summer coat grow through normally or will he have lines all year?

- will he lose weight if he's clipped/not clipped or is that just a myth... (he's out at night and i'd like him to stay that way)

- is it too late to clip

- if not, would one clip be better than another as I'd like him to stay out...

- providing he's cooled off, does it matter if he's not clipped?

Thanks very much and sorry for such a long post,

No it's not too late to re-clip. He hasn't started shedding his winter coat yet has he?

I'd go for a Trace or a Chaser clip.

So long as he is rugged then he shouldn't lose any extra weight being out with a clip.

Clipping has nothing to do with laminitis.

Personally I prefer horses who sweat up to be clipped as they dry off completely very quickly.

My lad lives out and has is front end clipped its a cross between a blanket and a trace clip, his back and half his side, back legs and bum are all whole. He was getting V sweaty when worked but did not want full clip. I am bout to do my last clip this weekend, although it might be that he will be clipped in summer aswell but hopefully not -

Hmm well I am not a fan of clipping when a horse is shedding however if it is sweating so much then I think I would just go for it! It's only February and his summer coat shouldn't be affected, but I wouldn't wait too much longer before doing it.

There are a lot of people on here who clip all year round and I'm sure there will be plenty who clip even when the winter coat is shedding and haven't had any adverse affects.

I just clipped mine out completely yesterday, was debating whether to just reblanket clip them, but to be honest it is so warm they were sweating all over when hacking, and have not been out of their medium weight rugs yet despite it now being february, so I decided clip out so they stay cool when hunting/ hacking and dry off quickly and then rug up well to ensure they stay warm.

I normally clip out completely in late Feb including legs to prevent the lines and to ensure their cowts grow back at once. Also saves the hairy rugs!

How about just doing a bib clip so that the front of the legs / girth area get some air and then between the back legs. At least you won't have a huge problem if it does affect his hair growth.

I'm in the same situation with my TB as he has not been in a huge amount of work - normally has a hunter clip - this year a woolley bear has emerged. Started to sweat today but his coat has satrted to come out so personally going to do the above or swaying more towards leaving it. Only go about another 6-8 weeks before it comes towards spring. (HOPEFULLY)
