I'm getting another puppy!! :D Thoughts please...

Hello! Just having a quick look in, first time I've had the computer even on for days, but the pups are sleeping, and I still have some energy left.
Have you considerd the spitzbreeds?

Both the Norwegian Buhund and the Finnish Lapphund is around 18, 19 inches, they shed twice a year, and yes, then it probably feels as if you get an extra layer on all socks or other items that touch the floor
grin.gif
, but the rest of the year you don't really have to touch them with a comb.

If they run through any muddywater they generally shake it all of at the other side of the puddle.
NEITHER NORWEGIAN BUHUND OR FINNISH LAPPHUND SMELLS MUCH WET DOG after rainy walks or baths.

The spitzcoat protects against both cold and warm weather.

If you only have one NB they usually
blush.gif
don't become as barky as in the company of another NB, and the FL isn't at all in the same barkingleague.

I haven't met one that weren't hardy, both fysicaly and mentaly, but not in the terrierway, it's very hard to describe but an ex. neighbour had Cairnterriers and at times, me and my mum help't out a lot with walks and clipping claws, and I can't quite put words to it, there's just a difference in the attitude or something.

Both "my" breeds likes some action, but a slow day at home with some chewies is also fine. And both sexes remaines an active, curious, not wanting to miss out on anything they think is important
laugh.gif
-personality until the day they die.
I've heard about breeds where after two, three years of age a lot of them, especially the bitches, is described as only leaving their bed for food and walks and nothing else.

And if one could take this as some guideline, in Sweden the insurancecompanys pay out on the lifepart of your insurance, for both the NB and FL and a handfull of other breeds until twelwe years of age, the rest of the breeds INCLUDING MONGRELS are in either the stop paying out at eight years or ten years of age.

But no matter what other breed you're thinking of, if you already have an Alsatian, aka GSD if I'm not totaly out in the woods with my dogknowledge, you have to remeber that they have their preferd way of playing with other dogs, and a lot of other breeds are put of by it.
As I've seen sometimes myself, GSD often simply like to slam their body into the other dog, thereby knocking the opponent down to the ground. I don't think the FL-bitch I have now would enjoy playing that GSDgame, my two NB-bitches maybe could have learnt to cope with it.
I don't want to tell you what breed to choose, but if you have a GSD-bitch and buys a puppy of a breed smaller than your GSD then I would definitely suggest a malepuppy. If you have a GSD-male I suggest you really research the other breeds playing behaviour before you buy anyone, after all it's not just the humans in the family that have to live together.

Good luck with your puppyhunt and I'm sure you will find something that fits, eventually.
Sorry for the last word in that sentence, I really tried ending this post in a posetive tone

, but my pessimistic side is irresistible.

Greetings from Sweden.

Is a pointer too big??? We live in a towny area and Star is fine with it.
smile.gif
Or what about a Hungarian Vizla??? They are supposed to be lovely and a bit more trainable than Pointers??

Well the poor recall is exactly my concern, but at the same time what I am preparing myself for.... I can't think of any other breed of dog that fits my criteria, but offers a great level of obedience.

I'd quite like a dalmatian but I know my mother will say NO way, TOO big!!
grin.gif
In fact what I'd really love is a Weimaraner, but I don't think I can convince her

We have dallies and they're not brilliant at recall. The bitch is fine but the dog is 13 and still only comes back 25% of the time, depsite years of trying to train him! The bitch is lovely but clingy and slightly neurotic. I love mine to bits and will have the same again when I get myself a dog, but they take a lot of work. Ours can't cope if they aren't walked for miles every day either - they don't cope well with staying in or only getting a short walk.

Love them but need a LOT of attention. Also both were totally hyperactive until about the age of 5!

I have both and would agree that Vizslas are infinitely more trainable than Pointers. Fit a lot of your criteria in that they are smooth coated and very athletic - they would basically run all day. So long as they have plenty to occupy them mentally as well as physically they make great pets.

LOL! Funnily enough I have just been offered a cocker spaniel - as in a friend has messaged me and told me there's pups left from the well bred litter he got his from.... Don't think they've any bitches though.....

Thank you very much for taking such time to reply, but I can't say that either breeds really look my type
smile.gif

As for your comments re my existing GSD bitch, Canine Puppy - well I'm sorry
blush.gif
but my mother and I were in stitches laughing at the thought of her behaving that way
grin.gif
She used to live with 2 springer spaniels, a JRT and a bulldog x dalmatian. She currents is bossed about by my mothers cat
grin.gif
She regularly interacts with all my aunts/Grannie's terriers who boss her about
tongue.gif
, or at least they try to, she tends to just walk away
smile.gif
She's been bushbeating and a gun dog in her younger days, hanging out and mixing with literally a dozen or more spaniels and labs etc, and was perfect at blending in and behaving herself to a very complimented standard
smile.gif
At the park she has friends who are beagles/terriers/pugs/labradoodles etc and she has previously nannied friends young dogs when they've come to be puppysat for the odd weekend
smile.gif
What is more, she is very elderly now; only poottles around the yard/to the park/round the block. She rarely breaks into canter more than once a week and is very definitely beyond being bolshy - she's an old lady now
frown.gif

I promise we've thought this through and talked about it a lot and I really wouldn't do this if I had any doubts that it would effect my current dog in a negative way, or be unfair on a new puppy

Yes all too big

I would LOVE a Pointer (was admiring some local ads of some yesterday
wink.gif
)/Vizsla/Weimaraner/Ridgeback etc
frown.gif
However, it's not so much about the living in the town (as we go out to the yard/fens twice a day, have loads of good walking/running/cycling by the river here etc etc), it's more about the size of my mothers house and the fact we have one biggie already.

Hence, I am resigned to medium sized *sulk*

A boxer from a good breeder is OK. Ours came from just outside Cambridge and is free of all inherited stuff.
The kennels is Lomali, Barrington Road, Foxton.

I would recommend them.

Thank you - although they are a handful at times.

The only other breeds I could think of off the top of my head that are smaller but with a short smooth coat are whippets or basenjis. I'm sure I should be able to think of loads more. Would you be open to a crossbreed? I'm sure the local shelters would have loads that might fit the bill? Good Luck dog-hunting anyway and be sure to post some piccies when you do get fixed up.

I have a border collie, in fact have had 3 before! All fab family pets, easily trained which would make them suited to whatever you like. Maggie is a big softy! She loves excercise and could run around with the wanger all day!!!! I think a collie would suit your crieteria! But i have one so am bias
smirk.gif
! !
I do like beagles! If there kept at the right weight there so active and would suit you i think!

eta- What about a sprocker?? My auntie has one! Shes lovely!! So energetic, very loving, well trainable??? Not big!

[ QUOTE ]
Seriously though, I thought that bassets were renownedly obstinate, and that lurchers are as reputed for running with a scent and having a poor recall as a beagle is....

[/ QUOTE ]

Thats interesting Pups, every working lurcher I know is superb at recall and running through stock. I guess it comes down to training!

Hungarian Vizla!!!!! The females can be quite small. They follow horses, short coated, absolutely adorable!!!!
How could you resist this cutie?????
