well - after lunging this morning and pony is still lame the vet came out again - the long and short of it is after much thought ive decided to go for the nerve blocks and x rays on her front legs - for those of you who dont know she is on loan indefinatly to me so i was debating wether to send her back or go ahead with finding out what the lameness is, she has been lame a month now - i have thought and thought about it and i really really like her so im gonna give it a go and see if i can get her sound - the vet says its probably djd - i dont really know what this is can you help to explain it - also the vet says if its not really bad she has every confidence with being able to get the pony sound and to manage it - can anyone tell me what treatments are likely to be please - im very worried about what it will all mean in real terms - thanks guys xx x
 
I'm going through a similar thing - had nerve blocks and x-rays done this afternoon. Vet is ringing me by lunchtime tomorrow to let me know if anything shows up. Feeling a bit stressed at the moment!

Degenerative joint disease is wear and tear on the joints - basically arthritis. Treatment ranges from joint suppliments, bute or cortisone injections - maybe other options my vet hasn't mentioned. Your vet will recommend a treatment depending on how bad it is. I have known horses who have managed a reasonable level of work on the right treatment.
I think you're doing the right thing - once you know what you're dealing with you can make a better decision on what to do with your horse.
 
Try not to worry too much, till you know what the problem is. The fear of the unknown is often much worst than reality. ((Big hugs)) and best wishes.
 
How old is she Walder? Wouldn't panic unless late teens or twenties and its been chronic for months, or even years. DJD (as I understand it) is the breakdown of a particular joint, usually due to wear and tear. In older horses it can be exacerbated by conformation probs but your vet will probably tell you all horses have some degree of DJD. Fingers crossed but hopefully wlll be mild and treatable. We're going through similar with the pony and have just had the results of the x-rays. Apparently no arthritis or navicular which is what was suspected so really pleased.

Bizarrely the vet seems to think that her feet are just naturally too long and the 'caven' of the hoof is just too big and remedial trimming/shoeing will sort it out.

The whole point is that these things can turn out to be just about anything some a lot less serious than first feared so please try not to worry. Just wait for your x-ray results and go from there. Good Luck xx
 
Just going through this with Pidge as he was diagnosed last week with osteoarthritis in his off hind hock (hock or bone spavin)
He's had a jab and I'm slowly reintroducing him back to work as he went lame just over 3 weeks ago and has been off work and on box rest.
Feel free to have a look at some of my recent posts there are lots of informative responses from a lot of people who have been down the same thing with their horses.
 
thanks so much for your kind replies - i will just be pleased whenits over and i can either be devastated because she has to go back or pleased that i can lkeep her - its the not knowing i only slept 2 hours last night - im like a zombie at work today x
