My mare Penny is too thin - this is genuinely giving me sleepless nights. I've had her on suregrow but in the last month the weight has fallen off her - she was fat!
I'm now gradually introducing mare & youngstock mix instead and she is also now being introduced to alfa oil (instead alfa a). I've added speedibeet to her feed (last week) and she is having hay at night (she's out 24/7). I'm not sure what else to do (other than bring her in which she doesn't like).... I dashed out this morning before work to get her a thicker rug for the field as there is apparently going to be a cold snap from Sunday..... She's just entered her last 3 months of gestation so I am really worried about her looking like a toast rack... Come on grass....

Any simular experiences with anyone else? What would you do? Hannah looks so well in her pics, I really want Peepsie looking that good again!

Baron seems to have lost weight in the last 3 weeks aswell, hes held it well all winter.

I wouldnt worry too much (well im not anyway), better to go into the spring a little underweight as they soon pile it on

If shes loosing it rapidly though perhaps it could be something else and maybe worth a chat with the vet?

Yes, my thoughts also. the vet is coming on Monday for her final EHV injection so I will ask him then. You are probably right, I'll be worrying about how fat she is later on - like I did all last summer. At least I hope so! I'm telling myself that because the foal has started growing so rapidly now, it's taken a pull on her resources and that she'll be fine with extra food...

Got my 2 pregnant mares on the mare and foal mix, noticed that they have put a little weight on with it, but they arent fat.

My friend has a few thoroughbreds that are out at the minute, she puts a bale of haylage out with them, and that is putting the weight on them, as they can munch as much as they want.

Suregrow is a good product but it is designed for horses (breeding) that are overweight, so very suitable for natives/WB's etc that hold weight but need vits etc. for pregnancy and lactation.

I'd change her right away onto TopSpec instead, as while she may need to lose weight later when grass is through, the foal is now taking a lot out of her and will do even more once born, and that weight loss sometimes is not easily made up.
