I am going into hospital to have a discectomy and have advised that there is a 6 week recovery time. I have a very energetic collie dog (think Duracell bunny on speed!) who I won't be able to walk for about a month.

Kennels is not an option as he chews his tail when in (ok for a week but not a month!) so really need to decide whether to have a walker come in twice a day or have him home boarded? I've never used either so don't know what to look for so can you help me? Also how much am I looking at as insurance only covers me in an emergency situation.

Also if someone can recommend a good walker/boarder on the Surrey/Sussex/Kent border that would be great!

If it were me I'd have a walker in twice a day. You might miss the company of your dog and you may be able to do some "mental" work with him to calm him down. I am a walker (and crazy collie owner) although not in your area and charge £9 per walk (45mins).

In your situation I would have a walker coming in, that way you get to enjoy the company of your dog and he is not disrupted .

I would check with your vets and see if they can recommend anyone but make sure they have Insurance.

Thank you, will speak to the vets. Another thing I'm wondering is that if I board him then I don't have to worry about hoovering up his dog hair! I know I'll miss him so perhaps a cleaner would be a better idea?

I would go with a walker (one who actually does walk):p go for recommendations, and as suggested check they are insured. Meet prospective walker and ask usual question, inc will he be walked with other dogs/how many?, ask if they offer (off lead) if you choose that option and have a look at the van he will be transported in (adequate partition) and see how they handle him (go for a walk with him/them)
