Friend of a friend answered a 'Free To Good Home' ad in the local press for a happy hacker / field companion and went to see the horse yesterday. Basically, horse is quite arthritic but sound and comfortable enough hacking out and also very good on the roads.
As luck would have it, friend of a friend also would be looking to keep the horse at the same livery yard it currently lives at.
If my friend's animal husbandry is anything to go by, this horse will have a 5 star forever home and when the time comes that it is no longer comfortable, any decisions regarding its future will be made objectively and compassionately.
From the sounds of things, the horse is not doing much at the moment, so regular gentle hacking can only be a good thing.
Well, my friend and their friend decided the horse would be ideal, and told the 'seller' that they would be happy to take possession as soon as possible.
The 'seller' then turned round and said that, since a fair amount of interest had been shown in the horse, they actually wanted some money for it... sorry, they actually wanted £2,000!!! This would include the rest of its feed (no kidding!), a saddle that doesn't fit, and rugs (but only if the rugs do not fit the new horse that the seller wants to buy).
Well, I certainly missed a trick when I parted with my spavin-inflicted mare to a happy hacker / companion 5* forever home for less than the cost of vetting my new horse. Should have taken a leaf out of this person's book.
My friend is going to phone the 'seller' and offer a nominal amount for the horse to cover feed and non-fitting saddle (probably about a tenth of the asking price) but they are not holding out any hope. Just seems a shame that the horse would have had such a great home.
What is with some people???
