born and bred in aberdeen! but living in england now alot of nice hacking round there! very horsey and all ways someone looking for a sharer if you get stuck shout me as i have alot of mates in aberdeen area (mostly Banff) that have horses

I was born up there and spent the first 16yrs living there before moving down to England. I didnt own a horse up there but the hacking would be great if I had. Apparently Aberdeenshire has the highest population of horses apart from Newmarket. I'm guessing its because of all the shetlands hehe!

Shopping is good in Aberdeen for normal shops. I was disappointed how small the shops are down in England compared. There are some good tack shops too. I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

Sadly the riding schools seem to be becoming fewer and far between now. Hayfield is probably the most well known, oldest and established though. It's the one I'd reccomend anyway. I rode there for the last year I was at college. I think it's a really nice place! They're pretty well organised and do many different activities from polo to beach rides. It's easy enough to get to as well, although if you don't have a car you'll need to walk up the road a bit, but it's only about 10 mins from the bus stop. There is also the Aberdeen Riding Club which is at Oldmeldrum. It's just by the bus stop and easy to get to but I don't know much about it now. I think one of the old riding instructors from Hayfield left and set up there a few years ago.

Loads, and loads of good hacking. Depends what you're looking for but there's the forests and hills on Deeside to the beaches north of Aberdeen. Vast amounts!

I'm about 25 miles north and we've got reasonably decent hacking here...if it weren't for the nutty drivers. Luckily I live on a farm so don't alway need to use the road anyway!

A few places to shop. Country Ways is in Aberdeen, tis a good place and sometimes they do 20% discount evenings.

The other bigger place is Gilkhorn out near Mintlaw. It's very large but searching for stuff can be a bit of a challenge as there's alot to dig through. There's old stuff mixed with new and sometimes things are a little grotty, but it's got everything you'd possibly need there.

There are a fair few competition centres and more livery yards than you could imagine all dotted about the place! Some really classy places too, it's great. There's loads of riding clubs as well.

Recently there's been talks that Donald Trump wants to build a Gleneagles style Equestrian Centre near where his new golf course is going! Would be pretty good that, but we'll have to wait and see!!

Try some of these links though, could give you some more info.

Aberdeen Riding Club is based at Oldfold in Bieldside in Aberdeen, not at Oldmeldrum - quite a difference in distance! It is on a bus route and is very well run.

Ditto this.If you haven't a car Oldfold better suited better for buses. It a long walk up to Hayfield esp in the winter and its dark.
You could try lessons in both and see which you prefer.
Only downside is both require you to join their Riding club after a certain period(used to be 3 months but that was ages ago so may have changed) so you would have to pick one or other eventually.

Duh yes! Baby brain, sorry. Only out by about 30 miles out.....

Membership at the riding schools means you're covered by their insurance---I think that's why they require it. It's not expensive, and at Hayfield, it means you can use all their facilities with your own horse.
