Hello there,
I'm Amy as you can see by my username, I'm 22 and 6'3. I have been horse riding on and off for 14yrs. Now its time for me to get my own horse. I believe I have most of the stuff, but I know I can't get some of the stuff till I have the horse ie Rugs, Saddle etc.
So, so far I have the following:
Nummnah, Tail and Leg bandages, All grooming brushes, a first aid kit, Head collar and leadrope, Helmet, boots, Jodphurs, hoof oil, grooming sprays.
I just have the feeling like I'm missing something out, just to let everyone know I'm Anti-whip ,plus I would like any advise people have to offer

Why are you anti whip????

It can be a valuable back up to the leg aid, carrying a whip doesn't mean you have to beat your horse on a regular basis!
 
Each horse is different and therefore will need different things so i would get the horse first then look at what they need.

But for the sack of the exercise don’t forget mucking out utensils and feed/water buckets.

Good luck and be prepared to be poor, but happy, for the rest of your life…..
 
Have you thought about investing in an evening course or at least some good books to guide you through all the aspects of horse ownership that riding lessons don't teach you?

Have you found a decent livery yard and has it got space, and a knowledgeable yard owner who is willing to help you if you need it?

Feed bins, scoops, mucking out things.

Have you started looking into livery yards yet. If it is your first horse, it might be worth investigating alot to find a nice yard with helpful people around.

Good points there Naturally.
I still find the whole looking after your horse thing a minefield. Its a wonder I havent killed my poor liitle girlie with some of the mistakes I have made

Hiya Katt, I think it was from a bad experience, when I was a child I was having riding lessons, it was near the end of the lesson, I had to do the "figure of 8" and the horse I was riding, just couldnt be bothered, she screamed at me to whip him, I refused that much I started to cry and she smacked the crap out of him

endless patience and as much free time as possible to spend with your lovely new horse.
 
I have a list when I finally decide which horse I want to buy:

- Lunge equipement: lunge whip, cavesson, training aid, lunge line

- Funky headcollar and leadrope a must have ;-)
- Travel equipment
- Buckets
- Feed bins &amp; scoop
- Supplements
- Electric Fencing
- Wormer
- Haynets
- Hi-Viz for you and horse (a must!)
- Tack inc a variety of stirrups and bits if you're me
- Boots
- Rugs: LW, MW, fleece and stable rug should suffice @ first
- 1st aid (tick)
- Grooming bits (tick)
- Feeds
- Insurance
- Hay and bedding
- Storage boxes (staples have good cheap ones)
- Wheelbarrow, fork, shovel and poo picker

ETA: Cocoa butter and mallow moisturiser from boots - your hands will need it

Hello everyone,
I've got tonnes of books, thankfully everyone knows I'm horse mad so everytime they see a horse book, they buy it for me, I end up reading the book that weekend and often refer back to it when I'm thinking of something.
I've been searching around and thankfully I have a good couple of months (moving soon) to get set up and have a good search round at the local livery yards.
I'm trying to find a yard that offers advise when I need it,plus to answer any 20 questions that I might have, would feel abit lost if I was offered a field and shelter.
Its all so exciting

my OH has asked if I'll teach him to ride, I reply with how will I when I'm on him all the time

How exciting for you! If you can make sure you can get somebody experienced to help you when going to look at a horse.

Things I used this morning at the farm were:
headcollar, leadrope, haynet, hoofpick, horse treats, fly spray, shavings fork, shovel, yard brush, wheelbarrow, feed buckets, water bucket, brush for cleaning buckets, scissors, knife (for chopping apples)

Other things Ill probably use tonight:
Brushes, bridle and bit, saddle, saddle cloth, over reach boots, hat, gloves, feed.

Other things to add to the list:
lunge line, rugs, brushing boots?, first aid kit, shampoo, washing up liquid (for really dirty buckets), sponge, sweat scrapper (sp?), hi-viz stuff for hacking, towels.

Thats all I can think of for now. Happy horse hunting, be careful!

I remember when I used to work at a livery yard(many years ago) I used to look after a Black 16hh mare and her owner bought her shocking pink ruge, lead rope, travelling boots, head collar. It stood out a mile and I loved it, I havent gone so bright though just baby blue for my baby boy

Hi,

Basics (which you seem to have) all the rest as and when, is what I would say.

If you are looking at DIY, then your own mucking out kit is essential as well. Get yourself some really good weather proof chaps though, nothing worse than cold, wet legs.

hey you sound pretty much prepared you will just pick up things here and there when you need stuff im still doing it ... but good luck and say good bye to late night outs during the winter :P

You're much better prepared than I am and I've got two! You'd be suprised how much you don't need or can make do without or can substitute for something cheaper that doesn't have 'horse' in it's description

Don't bother buying rugs or boots 'till you have your horse. Different makes fit different horses

It's also a good idea to have a vet and a farrier/trimmer all lined up before neddy comes home!

Ditto others on the stick thing. I hardly ever carry a short stick; usually I carry a schooling whip. I would never do more than a little flick behind the leg or on the shoulder, along the lines of "hey you, I just asked you something, pay attention!".
 
You wil have lots of fun spending your money on goodies but dont forget insurance.I know from experience its the best money you will spend

youl buy stuff as you go along i bought a bigger horse n never thought boots ect ect wouldnt fit him n was in n out tack shops on my dinner hour
