I think I have decided to give her another week or so to see if things can correct its self .
Am I cruel in thinking of having her put to sleep ??

The vet has said to give her time, How much time ?

At the same time I want whats best for her , She means the world to me .

I just dont know what to do ....I have never cried so much over the past few days , Im confused, fustrated and just plain depressed

Oh huge, huge hugs xx

You are not cruel thinking that way at all, you are being realistic and thinking about whats best for Tikka. Hopefully things WILL sort themselves out, but we do live in the real world and what we may have to deal with if things don't come right. What does you Vet think? Has he said what he expect to happen, is there a good chance of recovery or not. Give it some more time and keep your chin up x. She is obviously in the house, is it possible to keep her just in the kitchen just now to keep mess to a minimum?
Don't really know what else to say, have another hug and keep us posted xxx

Hugs. For you and Tikka.

Dont feel bad. I think you will know in a week whether there is any improvement. It is still early days.

Hugs, hang on in there, I cannot add anything other than what the vet has said, time is the only healer in these circumstances, we have a cat in at work tonight with the same problem (rta) aswell, we commonly see alot of cats with this type of injury, not so many dogs, they basically get drugs and strict rest and regular expressing.
My whippet broke her pelvis and suffered injury that infected her passing motions as well as the fracture, she was a rescue that I claimed actually, as she was going to be p,t,s, it took around 3 weeks of helping her to the toilet with a towel and expressing her, otherwise she just lay and recovered, as she could not walk either in total she was cage ridden for 6 weeks
It's got to be something u can deal with, otherwise u are no use to her in the condirion she is in, don't beat yourself up, we all have our limits.

((Hugs)) to u and your little girl

Col it is still really early days and I can understand your frustration.
Is there a shed or a garage you could keep her in until you get this under control? Put her bed out there so she can still feel at home or would that be totally alien to her/do you need to supervise?

To be honest if this is going to be a long running thing then I would question what quality of life she is going to have. But it hasn't even been a week yet, don't give up on her yet x
You're not being cruel, you're being realistic.

When we woke up to the carnage of two dogs, one old, one young, with a smashed hip and a mangled leg, we thought it was curtains. The elder bitch lived to 12 and the pup was going strong until 14. Keep strong, they can be amazingly resilient.

It really is breaking my heart to think of having her to put to sleep even now as I type this ... I am blubbing again .

What gets me is that she is healthy every other way, shes eating, shes drinking, Shes walking ....Ok shes maybe not herself just yet, I do hope that changes though as I am sorely missing the old bouncy tikka .

I hate to admit to needing support but ....I do .... I know this is only a forum ...But you dont realise how much you guys and your posts are helping me right now .

I am just so up and down at the minute so I apologise for that .

Tomorrow is another day right ?

Col xx
Thanks folks

It's only a thought....it's not the reality, not by a long chalk, especially if she is good in every other respect! You wouldn't be human if you didn't go through every single scenario.

Maybe have a good chat with your vet...I know Irish vets (particularly if they specialise in large animals) can be a bit...quirky, but if you tell him/her how very worried you are they can maybe be a bit more specific.
I have lost it in the treatment room before now, there is no shame in it!

I can understand how upsetting this is....I cry over scabby ears and urinary tract infections...when my boy isn't happy, I'm not happy, but Cala is right, try and stay upbeat for her.

Hi Col, its really late and you have probably gone to bed by now but I just wanted to you know that I am thinking of you and Tikka.

It such early days, you must be exhausted, emotionally drained, tired and worried - no wonder having to cope with her is dragging you down but in a day or two you will get used to cleaning up after her and wonder what you were worried about - chin up chuck, its too early to make a decision just yet
smile.gif

It's natural to think of all possible outcomes. I'm sure you will do whatever is best for Tikka (only you can judge as you know her best). It's a horrible situation for both her and you having to cope with her physical needs and your own emotional ones too.

Hi hon. Huge hugs to you {{{}}}
A week is a good amount of time, you'll be suprised at the imrpovement you'll see. Just take one step at a time and each time you see improvement it will spur you on to keep going.
You will know if the times comes - if its just a thought at the moment its not the right time.
You know where we all are for shoulders and hugs.
Keep your chin up hon you are doing Tikka proud.

Hang on in there hun. I can completely understand what a dreadfull time this is for you - you must be exhaused by it all.

I would be thinking along the lines of seeing what a week brings too. So, no i don't think you are cruel at all. As CALA says, we all have our limits.

It is still early days though and I am sure when/if you start to see improvement this will give you the boost you need. If you don't then you will know in your heart what the right thing to do is.

Good luck - we are all here for you whenever you need us x

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<HUGE VIBES>>>>>>>>>>>> for you. Hang on in there.
I know what you mean when you say how the support from forum users means.
We are all here for you.
hugs and massive support.

Oh God, Col. I really do feel for you........

I am overwhelmed with your posts of support ...It really is helping .

We may have had a breakthrough today ......I am still in thinking that I may just be seeing things or looking into things too much .

But ....She definitely squatted to wee and a little dripple came out , She was definetly making a shape at weeing .

Also her anal tone from what I could feel is getting tighter and shes actually pooed a little , Although I am not sure she knew what she was doing, it was still in the house but its coming out .

Shes definitely got no feeling in her tail ,So will ask the vet to check her for feeling in the tail and if there is none, May ask the vet to possibly dock her , She is messing all over it and at the minute it only seems to be in the way .

I am alot more positive today I have to say , Left her in the kitchen and went out to sort horses out , Came back and checked on her periodically .

Thank you all once again for your support, It really does mean alot to me

A more happier Colleen

Ps I am thinking of moving her out to the kennels where I keep the horses, I am out there all the time anyways .

Perhaps just in the meantime until she gets the hang of these bowels more .

So glad you're feeling more positive.

Just want to say give her a bit more time, it's still early days, and looking at the photos you posted the other day she looks a very bright and cheerful soul who's already put up a tough fight.
smile.gif

I know what you're going through and reading your post takes me back to my cat last year. Each case I'm sure is different but my cats anal tone took around 2-3 weeks to come back and around 50% of the time she will use her litter tray to poop now. When the accident first happened I didn't actually see her get hit by a car but she came home obviously in distress and I took her to the vets as I thought she had shock. I will never forget the vet looking at her and saying it doesn't look good', she had no cuts, bruises, broken bones and I was thinking you can't be serious she'll be ok. It was a rollercoaster, my vet told me give her a week or two, then six weeks, then have her put down. Franky after I got the hang of expressing her, (it now takes me literally a minute twice a day),sorted out her diet so that she didn't get the runs and she had recovered from the initial shock and trauma I found my old cat back. She was playing and fighting with me, she even goes out now, the decision for me was that I would keep doing this for her as long as she was happy, I had said to myself if I can express her and she doesn't mind me doing it then thats ok but if she hates it I'll have her put down, but doing this twice a day for the rest of your animals life is not an option most people can take. The decision has to be yours and I beat myself up for the first few weeks because I couldn't manage to start with, Expressing her was a nightmare, I just couldn't do it, then one day I just got the knack. I supose what I'm saying is take one day at a time, don't expect too much just yet and whatever happens you'll do the right thing for you and Tikka. I will say it's promising that she squatting, more signs than I got this early on. To help you cope there are a few things you could try,
Baby nappies, very weird I know but cut a hole for her tail, wet wipes are a must to clean up but at least you could have her in the house for a few hours without risking a mishap!
Try and control her water intake a little, I feed my cat aprox 1 1/2 to 2 hours before I express and add water to her food, once bladder is full I empty it then repeat later at night, This way I know she's getting water flushing through her but I get to empty it before she dribbles! Also when expressing empty bladder then if you can give it a couple of minutes then do again, the bladder will shrink and you'll be able to really empty it, I thought I had fully emptied my cats bladder till my vet had a go straight after me and got about the same again.
If all else fails Simple Solution stain and odour remover is amazing it literally turns wee into water and cleans mess up, have some in a spray to frshen bedding and possible accident areas.
Sorry this is long but after what I went through I wanted to let you know as much as I could.
Remember, one day at a time, its amazing how we find ways of coping and its still very likely that she will recover, my cats tail had beed pulled and resulted in stetching and tearing the nerves at the base of her tail this meant it was unlikely to mend even when the swelling went down.

Glad she is showing slight improvement. I think moving her to the kennels is a great idea, it will take the pressure off you both a bit. xxx

Well I have moved her out....Let her out into the dog run which is huge, Plenty of room to run about in, I went ahead and cleaned out tommy and missy and then put her into her kennel , Went to the shop to get some dog food, Came back and let her out again .

She did whine abit but hoping she will settle .

Really broke my heart to leave her

.

I am so sorry to be on such a downer again but I really can't help it, Took her to the vets this morning for them to relieve her bladder, Same vet as I seen the first time .....Hes said see how she goes by the end of next week and then I think you have to make a decision , He also said there is no improvement in her anal tone
frown.gif
frown.gif
.

Last vet that seen her seemed more positive . (its the same practise but just a different vet) .

I just don't know who to believe any more , I can normally go with my gut instinct but ....So confused right now, So tearful and just so depressed .

Piebaldsparkle I just seen your signature ..... I think thats what I am going to have to do .

It's still early days, only around a week since her accident, right?

It's one vet saying one thing and another saying another, don't worry TOO much.

(From an evil wench who keeps her poor dogs in a run...pity they'd demolish my house if they ever spent more than a few minutes inside
smile.gif
)

Keep your spirits up...she'll probably feel a bit better in herself if you are - you know how they are little sponges.

Awww hun, hugs for you.

Agree, it is still early days. I know this is difficult for you but it will at least get easier now that she is in the kennel. She isn't suffering so just give her a little more time.

Open a bottle of wine and put your feet up - you are doing all you can at the moment and only time will tell, and you can't hurry that
tongue.gif

You get optimistic vets and pessimistic vets, really no one can tell right now but if everyone is happy that she isn't suffering then you can but take each day at a time.

I am an impatient sod I know
