Well we've had a new neddy and a new second hand trailer recently and the patient man indoors has politley suggested that I might want to have a brief respite during my one woman horse extravaganza ..... So what do I do today?? I've just bought an arena rake and have quotes to combi ride the suface.

As I'm not sure I will squeeze these purchases past the non horsey but reasonable one I just wondered if anyone had any suggestions on the besy way to spend my last few days until he finds the rake / spots the arena has changed:D:D

Well if he's likely to lose it over a rake God knows what he'll do when he sees the quote for the combi ride! I think you need to start building an air raid shelter to keep you from the fall out. Failing that, what does he enjoy doing most? Do lots of it!

He is very difficult as darn it , he has inexpensive tastes:eek: This means I can seldom offset my own hobbies with his as football subs are cheap.

I think I'm going to need the air raid shelter good idea. He did agree we needed a leveller but I think he was thinking old gate on a tow rope:o

Just wait till the inevitable mid life crisis of sports car, new wardrobe and toupee; the latter being lost whilst driving the new sports car. . Then show him your expenses from the past and it will seem obsolete :)

Failing that working use Plan B: get your local(ish) female volleyball team to use newly surfaced arena for practise. He's bound to even want to use the new level to rake school for them;)

I guess the arena rake, is one of those things you tow? A bit more expensive than a rake! Actually I've just gone through all of this, new surface + grader, I've been on a 3 year mission to get my woodchip replaced with sand and rubber (couldn't run to combi ride) OH eventually gave way when I pointed out that it would add value or at least make our property more saleable when we come to move. He could see the sense in that although I have no intention of moving.

I think I might do something sensible and boring like sort out the pensions ...... and then tell him whilst I'm still basking in the glow of his admiration:cool: That should soften the blow:o

Thankfully I have a small arena so the combi is a stabiliser so not too much C 2K , I have tried the added value argument , he would rather have an ISA payment or a pension top up. I know this is sensible but the arena is really deep sand and needs sorting, if it was a boiler we would have fixed it already.

OK, plan B would be concern over new horse doing a tendon as the sand is so deep, vets bills etc I was taking my horses to a friends arena and paying as I didn't feel the woodchip was safe because it had completely broken down to a mush and with my retirement looming I have to admit I played on his sympathy a bit as well. "Oh I'm going to have all this time to enjoy the horses but I haven't got a safe area to ride in" etc. Yes, for anyone reading this who doesn't have an arena, i am very spoilt but I have worked hard all my life!

Do you need him for sentimental or financial reasons?

If no - could you lose him in the new surface?

If yes - then I agree with the above, tell him naked

Will try vets bills and enlist support of trainer . I have worked hard for what I have too and equally had nowt for a very long time so I understand where you are coming from.

As the male poster said on the thread about the lady buying the Bugatti saddle.

"tell him naked"

:D:D:D We have been married too long. He would probably tell me to go and iron the wrinkly pink thing I was wearing:o

:D:D:D More sentimental really and he could be easily lost on the old surface, now that's an idea perhaps if I suggest that unlike other wives I wouldn't have to dig up the patio:D:eek::eek:

I know exactly what you mean ! Let us know how you do it because I would like to buy a youngster but know that wont go down well. Thinking maybe a bay as other 5 are bays and he might not notice and when he does perhaps I could use the old saying " what that old thing I've had it for ages" :D

I know the feeling - my OH's idea of a splurge is buying lemonade in the pub instead of lime and soda

Good luck :D

It's worth a try, My friend spotted another haffie last week free to good home and said go for it if you swap fields carefully he will never notice! Also my old yard owner had a Beautiful Dutch warmblood filly that her husband thought belonged to a livery for years:D

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Will do , fortune favours the brave and the bold;)

This is why my OH loves my expensive hobby. So when he comes home with a new gadget and tells me how much it was, I never bat an eyelid as its cheap in comparison :)

I daren't tell my parents how much I actually spend on Ned...when I bought him a £350 saddle they nearly had a heart attack!
When I explained how badly his old saddle fit (XS and he needed L!!!) they calmed down a wee bit.

I wish he did have gadget habits etc , my friends OH has flying lessons and a bike and sports car and she doesn't even have one horse , I would have a string of polo ponies married to him:D

I never tell anyone apart from OH (and then selectively) how much as people even family just can't cope with the sums involved and don't understand how long a saddle can last etc.

Suggest you might take up driving, you could show him the Bennington web site, two carriages at around £12,000 each, a bigger horse box AND a trailer, a harness or two, and matchy hats and back protectors for both of you. When you tell him you have decided against he'll be relieved that you only want a new surface and a rake to keep it flat.

Well if it is your last few days then SPEND SPEND SPEND , you cant take it with you when you go lol x

You make a persuasive point:D:D

Good idea I often do the worst case scenario and then choose the set up cheaper option ... trouble is that's how I managed to end up with the trailer after we looked at horseboxes three times the price so he may twig:o

Never mind your OH...I trust if you get the Cushionride you,(when you do 'go'!)will want to be buried 6ft under your new surface,in order to get maximum usage and value out of it:D

Good luck with the OH, I'd avoid Combi ride it's what I have and it's rubbish the arena has always been deep to ride and you have to constantly water to make the combi ride any good, it's also almost completely rotted away in 4 years so I'm left with sand and the tiny bits of rubber in it.

I'm saving up for flexi ride (or similar) as a proper stabliliser.

Yep me and my darling furbabies that have departed when I go (which as we now many be before my prime if he finds out:eek:). Got to make it worth while nd heck in that case I'm worth a waxed surface;)

Wow thanks for the tip I already have rubbish sand with something tiny and rubbery in it ... perhaps my arena has been down this route before:eek:
