I ve used human shampoo on my horses tail for years so when i was in the supermarket I thought Id buy a cheap as chips 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner. I only used it on his tail but two days later when he got sweaty out on a hack he bubbled up with hives. It was awful and I felt so sorry for him, he could hardly swallow. The vet injected him and gave me some bute.
I used his normal horse shampoo on his body but i guess some of the 2 in 1 stayed in the sponge, i swear i really rinsed and rinsed him. For the sake of a few extra quid I ll think I ll use proper horse shampoo from now on !!

I know, I wracked my brains to think what else it could of been. I ve never used 2 in 1 before just herbal essence shampoo. The lumps were really bad around his tail, where the shampoo was used the most. Its the only thing I can think of.

It could just be that particular shampoo remember.

We use human shampoo - we buy it in a 5litre tub from the hairdressers outlet or similar, and have never had a problem :)

Hmm, the cheaper shampoos are more harsh/stripping I've always been told, so maybe it was from that then if it was a new product on him.

Hope he's better soon! I'd give him a mild hibiscrub bath to make sure any traces are off him too :)

Haha Hairy? Thanks!! Flares are back in town lol.

Ive always used cheap shampoo on my mare who has a bath every week in summer for her sweetitch and sensitive skin and never had a problem in the 3 years ive been doing it. And her skin cant tolerate much.

I think poss it was the fact that your stuff you used was shampoo AND conditioner that was maybe the problem? Some conditioners can be very harsh, and their function is to coat the hair follicle and make it smooth, which is possibly why your horse has reacted.

I use Tea Tree shampoo on mine from a major supermarket. Cheap & cheerful - he's a coloured with lots of white bits and has sensitive skin, and this seems to suit him fine.

i personally never use huan shampoo on my pony unless im really deperate just incase there is an ingredient that is harmful to horses

Horse shampoo is not any different from human shampoo its just a lot more expensive!!

The likely cause if it is the shampoo is that it wasnt rinsed properly/or an ingredient in that particular one disagrees with him

I always use human shampoo - T-tree tingle :) never had a problem, it was more likley to be a fly bite or food reaction

Same here, by Alberto Balsam. Bearing in mind that I generally use about half a bottle, I'd rather pay 88p than £5 upwards! I reckon it was the conditioning bit that caused the problem.

I've used both human and horse shampoo without a problem - I stopped using tea-tree & mint conditioner on his tail after the sheep in the field with him thought it tasted yummy :(

I opt for lidl's 60p-a-litre shampoo! It's great, never had any problems even with the one who's allergic to everything!

Makes them lovely and shiny too :)

Baby shampoo is actually what some hairdressers use to help strip colour dye from your hair! So it cant be that gentle really...!

Indeed, and those ones that are "no tears" well guess what...the ONLY part of the body to have that amount of alkalinity is the eyes. The Ph levels are made to match that level.....so in all honesty not suitable for the rest of the body!
I would guess its the two in one thats caused the problem. Stick to simple separates, and you will probably never get this again.
