Took my youngest (3) for a little hack up through the 'jungle' (bridleway surrounded by tall hedges and trees) today. Mick was feeling quite happy, and was stepping out and she was enjoying practicing her rising trot. We got up as far as we could but the mud was deep so we went through an opening in the hedge onto the gallops which the local farmer lets us use.
Just an expanse of flat green headlands.... and it would have seemed rude not to, so we (I

) decided to really give this pony a PROPER try. I said "Do you want to go REALLY fast?" and she giggled and said yes....

At first he wouldn't, he's so lazy! But then I gee'd him up a bit and he broke into a fast canter , mummy running as fast as she could, and child screaming her head off with fright / delight

.

We stopped, turned around and did the same back down to the headge again, where mummy had to stop and find her inhaler before she passed out

. Daughter announced "Oh, Man! that was SOOOO fast!!!" whilst grinning like a cheshire cat

Back at the yard daughter hadnt NEARLY had enough and Mick was still gee'd up too...

so we popped up a tiny cross pole and went over it a couple of times... he really took care of her, he now jumps at a decent height rather than the not at all / jump 3ft OVER the height of the jump that he was previously doing. We've also got him trotting over poles rather than attempting to fly them.

She's been chattering all afternoon about what she did and asking to have another go tomorrow... her first proper canter and his first cross pole that he hasnt lost a child over... ( but give her credit where credit's due she has a bum like superglue)

God, I love that pony!

some people have seen these before, so apologies for that... but for those who havent... my daughter and what she describes as "the best pony in the whole world, he's my best mate"

I went for a gallop on cornfields with my daughter (5) at the weekend....I usually do what you have been doing, ie running alongside panting and wheezing,

but I went out on my horse this time and we actually went accross the cornfields together....she was so excited!!! She has decided that she is going to be a XC rider when she grows up....I just kept looking accross at her and I could'nt believe I was doing this amazing thing with my daughter...I hope she remebers when she grows up..........indulgent photo coming up.....

That pony just loves your daughter. You forgot to say how he came up to the gate when he heard her playing in the yard.... I think it is mutual love

He does doesnt he? he just stood watching her waiting to come in and 'play'. I never in a million years thought I'd find a pony like him. he's the pony every mother wishes they had as a first pony... and can never find.
P has resigned himself and his wallet to the fact that this isnt just a 'fad' for her and has agreed to make us some jumps for home

OMG! I love her hat cover

It's these shetlands, I'm convinced (but I'm biased). They instill such confidence and the right one can do wonders for a child.

I can't wait to be doing all those things with mine, it sounds like fab fun

Absolutely...ours really looks after my daughter, I wouldn't be going out hacking with her otherwise....I trust the pony completely, she's never put a hoof wrong in the last 3 years or so..... we will be looking for a larger pony soon, and I am really worried that the next one may knock her confidence a bit....its pity they don't come with extendible legs isn't it!!
