I started looking for a new farrier when I got the new boy. Main reason being that my previous farrier didn't work Saturdays and I was relying on a friend to bring horses in for me, which I didn't think was fair.

After much searching found a lovely farrier who wasnt too far away, he came out about 5 weeks ago and shod my new boy, no problems. When he was leaving I wanted to put a date in the diary, but he said he would pencil me in and we would confirm day nearer the time.

Well I phoned him today to book an appointment and he told me he thinks that I am too far away to come out so he won't be coming

He must have known this 5 weeks ago so why didn't he say then? Now I am stuck with a horse with a loose shoe and no farrier.

Thats annoying, I agree. Could you ring him back and plead a bit - say you understand if he doesn't want to take you on (although you're gutted as he did such a good job last time and came so well reccommended...) but could he possibly do your horse one more time, perhaps if you paid him a little extra for fuel, so that you get a chance to look for someone else while your horse has shoes on... Could you box him up and take him to his yard? Farriers seem to respond to flattery!

Hope you do find someone else. Farriers are a funny breed aren't they, sometimes its like walking on egg shells!

I agree with Honey. I'd grovel and flatter a bit and even pay a little bit more just to get sorted for now so I had more time to find another one. It's got to be worth a try. :) X

Thanks guys, just spoken to him and he has given me the number of another farrier who has kindly agreed to come out Saturday morning :) hopefully this one will stick around or my horse is going to get a complex!

Original farrier was half hour away but said he had other clients nearby.

I agree, farriers are a strange breed!

I had one ring me and tell me that exact thing an hour before he was due to arrive to look after one of my ponies who was flat out, unwilling to stand up, with a deep abscess.. I was disgusted and furious..

Cross fingers for your new farrier

KSR That's awful!

I know, I thought half hour was pretty close tbh

Thanks, my horse is a good judge of character and will let me know whether he likes new farrier or not :) lol

Sounds like my Maje :)

Yeah I know.. My friend was disgusted as she recommended him..

My farrier lives in Brighton.. Commuted to Hinckley and now Devon :)
