Right, I have been reading lots about trailers and cars and I even but a thread on here and am still not too sure what is best.
I have bought an old rice trailer - flat faced so is heavy but strong. I am just about to buy a 4x4 and we did orginally believe an Audi A6 Avant would be ok to pull the trailer but having read a little more and spoken to dealers we believe this would not be safe enough and could cause problems. We are now thinking of using a freelander. We have a 15.3 quarter horse who would be travelling alone and I would only be using the trailer about twice a month max for clinics and fun rides.
Can you let me know what you think....??

I am by no means an expert on towing, but I have towed in a freelander once, never ever again. It's a nice car, I was going to buy one before I came to Canada, but it is not a workhorse. Can't comment on legalities, I am not up on kerb weights etc, but it just wasn't very nice to tow with, and I am very glad I didn't have to attempt steep hills!

Do you have any idea how much the trailer weighs? If not take it along to a local weighbridge. That is the only way you will find out if it's legal.

I used to tow my Rice Beaufort trailer (which weighs 1000kgs) and 1 14hh pony (weighs 400kgs) with a Saab 93 estate (can tow 1600kgs). I was well within weight and was totally legal. However it feels so much better now I have a 4x4. Much more secure...

Right! I am confused as well but think i have (with forum members help) got it sussed!!! I have a rice trailer but not the flat front one, mine is front unload so i think it is a bit lighter - but even so i dont think that much difference - i have a 14.3 welsh sec d weighs 430 kgs approx - i have a 2.0 diesal freelander towing capacity 2000 kgs so it is legal - i also have had an anti smake bar fitted which i would never tow without as its extra stability - never had any trouble towing - although we dont have many big hills in our part of the world - hope this helps!!!!!!
