im so fed up now had a bad few years loosing my horse then loosing both my dogs a few weeks ago
got 3 other lovely horses but all this stuff about stolen ones its making me ill
!!!!
im so scared that if mine get stolen i will not be able to cope does anyone else feel the same.. why isnt this been on the local news?
or even the main news

The reason its not been on the news is that there has been so much scaremongering amongst the equestrian community and false reports of horses being stolen. I appreciate that we need to be alert put falsely spreading rumours of thefts doesn't help anyone in the long run.

Hi donablue - been following your posts with interest but some posts are just info and there isn't really a lot you can post back as a reply. You certainly sound as if you've had some bad luck over the last few years but try not to let it spoil your day to day life and enjoyment. A bit about the press and media. Sadly, one of the main driving forces behind stories that make the headlines is selling papers and getting viewers. So world and national news that is shocking, tearjerking, etc etc gets the air time. Even local papers/TV is guilty and whether or not something gets into the local paper or on the local TV news depends solely on (a) whether there's anything more exciting happening that day or (b) whether it's "good" headline material. For example, the rescued Amersham horses made headline news across Britain because of the sheer scale of the horror. But similar, smaller horrors crop up every day somewhere in the UK and they never make the news. But you can do a lot to influence this. If you've had lots of thefts in your area, is there a human interest side that would make a good local story, eg "Cruel thieves steal sick little girl's best friend" - you know the sort of thing. You could then either do a little article yourself and send it to your local paper or ring up the news desk and ask to talk to someone about it. On a security level, I'd make sure all neds were freeze marked and microchipped and big signs say they are and also warn CCTV in operation. You can buy cheap CCTV kits that link into a dedicated channel on your TV. Could you also organise a neighbourhood Horsewatch where a group of owners swap phone numbers and addresses and if anyone sees anything suspicious, they ring everyone else. That on it's own might make a good human interest story to try to get into your local paper. Good luck and try to stay positive xxx
