I got up this mornng and I though 'sod this, am I really going to let a horse beat me?'

So I went for my lesson at local riding school (working on my position so that I can adapt to Oscar rather than worrying about the horse) and by the time I'd finished my legs were nice and supple!

Got back to the yard, tacked up Oscar and lunged for 20 mins. Then I got on (in the outdoor school where he's normally ok) then I thought, sod it, lets go in the indoor school.

So, walked up to the gate and the napping started. Instead of tensing and pulling, I put my hands up his neck, stroked and let my legs go very limp (but managing to move him at the same time!) It lasted for 3 mins and then I shouted at him 'Oscar, will you walk on' and hey presto, he walked into the school!

We did about 5 minutes and the whole time I used my 'lunging voice' got back to walk and made him walk past the gate. He started to nap so did the same and I shouted (in my best schoolmistress voice) and again he walked on.

We finished by me getting off him at the top of the school and leading him back to the gate!!!

Anyone who knows what a nightmare I've been having lately will know what a big deal this is for me.

I'm going to lunge tomorrow and then go around the block with my OH on his share horse. If it takes 2 hours, we WILL get around the block!

Thanks for reading x

Thanks hun - yes I did read it and you're right!! as normal.

He's too good a horse to get rid of and I guess any horse with talent is going to have a few 'quirks'

Are you still going to Gt Bookham tomorrow x

No I can't - I've got to work till 2 (doing an out of hours office move) and feel really bad as I've let Chocolatelog down - said I'd groom for her! Was a last minute thing as we didn't think we'd have IT around to deal with the move but they've miraculously undercovered one

Will take him out soon though defo - he's so good out!

I'm planning to take him soon so will give you a shout! x

Thanks guys! TGM, he was so good with Misty at Holt Farm, she didn't even squeal at him which was a bit of a shock!

Think that the grey matter just needs to keep ticking so he needs to be out and about.....and now that I know he's just taking the pee (ie napping at gates/going off the yard) I can yell at him safe in the knowledge that he's not in pain.....

OH was laughing at my voice though - it's a bit embarassing riding with such a loud gob the whole way round!

W - thanks hun, you know what a big thing that was for me....just have to nip it in the bud now.

Lex - I also think he could be that's why I think I woke up this morning and though 'sod this, he's a horse for god's sake'!!

Seriously, I really think using the same voice for lunging and schooling could be the way forward - atleast he gets what I'm asking for now....it will be a bit of a journey but I now feel that I can crack it if I work at it.

He also needs to be ridden EVERY day now that he's fitter - or lunged at least....

He is indeed a horse...... your horse, and with time you'll shape him to be your perfect horse, he's just testing you to see if you'll chuck him out in a field and leave him again!!...... Not blumming likely! Go V, go V, go V, go V!!

PS: you want raspberries in that cheesecake aswell?

I don't know your story, but well done on managing some of your demons. I often think sometimes people are afraid to use their voice as additional aid. There are a couple of people on my yard who let their horses bully them a bit and I think need no more than being bullied back by using a loud and firm, as you say, school mistress, voice - i'm convinced it would make a world of difference (to both the horse and rider LOL). I keep my voice out of their problems though as I don't want to get involved in the yard politics.. But good on you and all the best for tomorrow.

I haven't read any of you're past posts but well done you!
I know how you feel, I used to ride a 17hh nappy git, it gets so frustrating but something as simple as that is such a major thing! I used to be grinning from ear to ear if I got him to canter a whole circuit in the sand school!

Well done, hopefully you can move on now and get over this rough patch, and its all a learning experience, hopefully I can sort mine out too! Where did you go for your lesson if you don't mine me asking?

I didn't go anywhere I was at my yard ..... if I'd have gone out for a lesson he would have been an angel!!
