I've switched on at work this morning to the devastating news about cavvy. I am just so upset at this news, we saw him at your horse live and all thought how beautiful he was and how Mary obviously loved him.

I'm not casting any views about what happened because I don't know anything about eventing, but as a layman surely something has to be done in this sport to stop all these fatalities.

There seems to be far too many of these ' accidents' that can happen anywhere anytime. Something needs to change imo.
 
I was there, it was a true accident that could have happened anywhere - a stride wrong at a big solid fence.

Why not stop eventing, put all the horses back into their fields and we won't have accidents? I don't event, I don't have the balls but take my hat off to everyone that does.

That horse until the moment of the accident was loving every moment.

Yea but I have know horse's to break their legs in their field, so is it not dangerous to turn them out?

I agree with you totally SSM. Cavvy loved his 'job'.
 
I went to Cardiff for the Express Eventing - all the way from London. I won't be going to another one. All credit to the six who completed, and to Oliver Townend, who rode a magnificent dressage test and even better jumping effort, but but I think Lucinda Green, who was interviewed at the event and who (rightly) never minces words, was right when she said it was much too much to ask horse and rider. Most competitors didn't get past the middle of the X-co course, at best. Tina Cook said Miner's Frolic was fazed by the whole thing, and I bet he wasn't the only one.

What I really object to is the efforts to 'sex up' eventing. Eventing is a sport, not an entertainment in the same way as some people think Strictly Come Dancing is. (And who needs Arlene Phililps and Andrew Lloyd Weber?) I gather they're trying to bring in more spectators, but I don't believe anyone who is not already interested in horses and equestrian events would spend £35 or £45 for tickets, plus the cost of getting there, any food/drink they might buy (if they were lucky; the catering outlets ran out of all hot food and hot chocolate in the interval: we were lucky to get tea and coffee) etc. And however much they try to make some of the jumps more like x-co fences, it is not and can never be x-co: there is no space, no undulating terrain or effect of light and dark, no decisions for the rider on how to approach the fence (in the way that they would on a real x-co course) or for the spectator to watch the differences in approach. They were more like a different sort of sj fences.

It wasn't the best of days even before Mary's accident and, while I agree it could have happened anywhere, that was a very confusing fence: I couldn't work out how it had to be jumped until I saw a couple of horses do it.

Please, British Eventing and everyone else associated with this tragedy, put Express Eventing on the scrap heap.
 
I do actually agree with you Maricamac. The DTM was fabulous and such fun to watch (I agree though that Arlene and Andrew really didn't add anything to the experience, we had radios and it was much more interesting to hear Carl Hester speak about each test). The jumping was not fun, it didn't help that so many went wrong and got eliminated but then when Mark Todds horse banked the corner and the top collapsed (luckiily after horse had jumped off) you just felt it wasn't safe anny excitement disappeared and tehre was relief every time any of them jumped a fence after that. Seeing so many wonderfully brave horses look "scared" and confused was not nice to watch. In a way as it was so new no-one could predict how the horses would react and hindsight is a wonderful thing but those duck houses where the lovely Cavvy and Mary had their fall were late on in the course and one difficult fence too many.

Not true - my friend has lost 3 horses all in accidents in the field. I think about this everytime I get the wobbles about going eventing.
 
Yes I too am shocked by this news. I just found out about it a minute ago. He was a gorgeous horse. Poor Mary must be devastated. Condolenses to all connections.
It must be awful for the event organisers too with this being the first time the event had taken place.
 
I completely agree with Marciamacs comments as I was also there, it was one big balls up from start to finish with regard to parking, catering and just bad organisation. There was no atmosphere although people were trying hard to create one. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Arlene Phillips did their best but it was just embarrassing, I can't believe Arlene actually commented that she thought one of the horses didn't like he music! It would have been much better to have listened to Carl Hester on the radio, but having already shelled out loads of money for the ticket, diesel, parking etc I was reluctant to pay out even more. Tara TP tried her best and she made the right decision to pull up before she had an accident, but was it even wise to put her on a horse in her condition? The going and the course were terrible and I wasn't surprised that a horse ended up being badly injured and before anyone shouts me down I know only too well how accidents can happen whether you are eventing or you just have a horse in a field but the course, and the going were appalling. It was so lucky that Mark Todd's Gandalf didn't end up injuring himself after the corner fence collapsed when he banked it. There was such a huge amount of money at stake the riders and owners are going to want to give it a go, after all they know the risks, I'm just so sorry that it ended with such a sad outcome for Mary and Cavvy.
 
I know I cant beleive it. just found out from someone who was lucky enough to be invited to watch it live and she was crying when she told us! she said it was awful, the horses were all backing off XC and the ground wasnt good enough! she thought the grass was too short and not giving enough grip. I am still so shocked as Mary King is such a pro XC that is were she shines and Cavvy as well was so bold XC. I dont think this express eventing thing should be a goer! These top horses are used to spending lots of time off in the winter and my friend who went said it looked like the horses didnt know whether they were coming or going. Not going to have made eventing any more popular in the Public eye!!!! My thoughts are with Mary and I hope she is o.k.
