Thought I would share tonights story with you

Yesterday my mum walked the dogs in the morning as usual. She came across this two guys with a small dog, they had got the dog two days earlier and let him off lead already!! The dog ran over to play with mums dogs but soon after it ran off

Tonight, I got in from the yard and dad went to walk a few of our dogs, which he does every night around 8/8.30. He rang my mum after a while to get us to help him as he has found the dog. So while mum put our dogs away I drove over and she was going to follow on foot. There is a big nature reserve open to dog walkers but fenced off with paths all around it too. He was inside the reserve behind a fence, dad had heard him barking and gone to look, the dog was growling at us behind the fence.
I *naughtily* tried to break the fence but it is fairly new and very sturdy so there was no getting in that way.

Me and dad went into the reserve and tried to get to him, there were lots of trees and branches in the way but we got to a corner where we thought was the one and no sign, mum then arrived and mum and dad went back round to find him. We had been looking too far over. When they went back round he started barking and growling again, giving me an idea which way to go to look.

I pushed my way through thick branches and came across a taller-then-me wall of brambles/nettles/branches. Solid. I thought, there is no way I can get through here, but I was only about 10 feet away from him and I wasn't about to give up
I stamped my feet on as many branches as I could, while telling my mum to keep talking to the dog, mainly to keep him barking so I knew where to go. I got forward a bit but couldn't open up the branches higher up so had to tunnel through the lower branches. They were tugging on my hair and cutting my hands, and I was trying not to wreck my clothes.

Managed to open up a tiny hole to him and he started snarling at me (poor thing was utterly terrified after around 32 hours outside in the rain and the cold that we've had this last two days. I tried looping my lead through its handle to hook round his neck but I missed three times.

I could only see one other option, I braced myself and thrust my hand in and pinned him down (gently!) then used my other hand to punch a larger hole in the undergrowth. I wrapped my lead round his neck a couple of times and then picked him up, once I brought him to my body he relaxed and I carried him out (dad had come back by then so helped me back through the brambles).

I have a cut where he bit me, and a lot of deep scratches, my wrists make me look like a self harmer and my hair was full of leaves and twigs but the little dude is safe

He was very hungry but we didn't want to overfeed in one go, so hes had two small feeds and some water and is settled in a cage with some blankets for the night.

He will be with us for the weekend I suspect and then we need to work out what to do with him. Breaks my heart that he was so very close to spending another cold night outside and we're due more rain tomorrow!

We've no idea who they are or where they were from. There's no posters and they haven't been seen out looking yesterday. We will have to ring vets, kennels, pet shops etc to see if they rang anyone.

Well done RG. :) having had to fight through brambles and hawthorn to rescue my own dog..stupid enough to get tangled in undergrowth in his eternal hunt for blackbirds! It's not nice but nothing like what you went through.
Can't imagine loosing my dog and then just abandoning it and going home! Maybe he's best off not going back to them.

So Titch as we call him, has no microchip. He hasn't been reported missing to the local vet/dog warden/shop owners/there are no posters up. The people who had him don't seem to have bothered doing anything.
We have a new home lined up for him if no one comes forward in the 7 days. I want to keep him, but we have 11 collies and my parents just wouldn't consider another (unless it was a border collie) understandable, we DO have a lot of dogs. But I am getting very attached to him. I just hope this new owner is nice.

It would appear he has an angel switch that flicks on when I appear. Mum keeps moaning about his behaviour and saying she is struggling to deal with him, whereas I think he is a total darling
