Apologies in advance, but this is pretty self indulgent I am afraid...

I got my new boy 2 months ago. My confidence wasn't that great and I was a bit of a nervous rider.

Well! NO MORE!!!! Ha ha! In the last month, Kalief and I have just clicked. I feel that this is a combination of a new saddle, moving to a new yard and a happier horse and therefore happier me.

My achievements recently include:

1) sitting to his spooks and now finding them quite funny.

2) Hacking out and not pooping myself at 'what ifs'

3) cantering out on a hack with other horses both in front and behind

4) cantering across an OPEN FIELD (!!) and not totally pooping myself

5) going out on a hack on my own and having a canter (that was today)

I have thought about how bl00dy lucky I am to have found him and things not turn into a total disaster. I swear he hasn't put a foot wrong since he came to me.

BTW, he isn't perfect and can be a naughty spooky bugger, but it doesn't seem to matter!

Hello confidence! It's me!

So thank you my boy! I love you!

well done!!!

I also did my first canter whilst hacking out alone today on my share horse. It was so much fun i turned around and cantered back across the field! He can be quite spooky and i'm not that confident out hacking but it was great today.

I hope you continue to have a lot of fun with your horse!

It sounds retty sad actually now I have read it back, but hey, who cares!! I have just decided that I will push myself out of my comfort zone every so often. When I do, I think to my self - now what was so scary about that then?! and hey presto! new confidence level achieved!

you have found the horse that has taught you to enjoy him. Well done to you (and to him for training you so well) I hope you both have a very long and happy relationship together

It doesn't sound sad at all. I'm afraid that I'm the sad one because I was really pleased with myself yesterday when I managed to hack out (in walk) all by myself for the first time ever. My pony is brilliant and she looks after me and I look after her. It's just the best feeling when you get a horse that gives you confidence isn't it?

oh that's a lovely post! I know how you feel, I've yet to canter George on a hack since moving yards but I can feel it coming on! The sad thing is I have had George nearly a year and I have never had the courage to canter him in company - how pathetic is that!

Thank you very much everyone! It is so nice to hear that one isn't alone in this sort of thing. Losing your confidence is so awful I think and it is really difficult to get it back.

I have had brilliant friends help me, lovely peeps at the new yard and a super horse to bring my confidence back. Don't get me wrong, I am still a total wimp, but if you remember to take each worry as a challenge, the feeling of joy and pleasure at overcoming a fear is amazing.

I also think that it is important to take things at your own pace and to congratulate yourself for every fear over come.

Well done everyone!

He is adorable and I am starting to feel the same with my boy.... I am finding that we are settling down now and really starting to chill out. He is TB x and a bit of a psycho normally!

Best of Luck in the future!

I know exactly how you feel and I'm so pleased for you. Its taken me three years to feel completely comfortable with my pony. I'm now doing a little bit of dressage and I'm just chuffed when I do the whole test.

Ah yes but look what you HAVE done! I have cantered across stubble fields in company but haven't yet tried jumping with Jerry nor have I competed at dressage.
But I will!

I don't think its pathetic at all. You got George to enjoy having a horse and as long as you are doing things with him that you enjoy then that is fantastic. Take it one day at a time and just enjoy having your lovely horse.

It isn't pathetic at all! I know what you mean, it is this ridiculous mental block that you just cannot seem to be able to get past. I promise you though, when you do it is like an epiphany! A whole new horsey world opens up!

Yay to us now not so wimpy riders!!!
