I'm beginning to look for my next horse and would like a pure irish draught, preferably the heavier built type and a decent weight carrier. As some of you will know, I made the decision to say goodbye to my horse of a lifetime and have her pts recently. My heart is broken and I will never forget her but it was the right thing to do. I've gone from having 3 horses to no horses in less than 12 months and it's feeling very alien to me.

So, does anyone with this wonderful breed have any advice for me as I start my search? Which people to approach possibly? Good bloodlines? Where they all might be? I'm in Cumbria so I know I'll have to travel to view any. I'd consider a youngster or a ridden. Mare or gelding considered, but historically I've always got on better with mares. Any help will be welcome.

OP - if you go back to your previous posts I am pretty sure a few names of breeders and dealers were offered up, including Janet's Indigo Irish Draughts. If you are in Cumbria you could also look at Bowland Irish Draughts. Also have a look on the IDHS(GB) web site for sale section. Be prepared to put your hand in your pocket though.

Thanks folks. Yes Janet I will be calling you when you're up and about again. You are most certainly on my list of those to ring. I'll have a look on my previous threads too.

You could try Jack Thomas-Watson who is up your way - he brings horses over from Ireland and has some very nice stamps, with sensible prices.

We "may" be selling our 17.2 5 yr old later in the year, depending on how things work out. He's pure Irish Draught with 10" bone.

Beautiful HGA-12, where did you get her from?

Spacefaer - that's a bit big for me sadly. Good luck with him tho.

Personally I'd be going to Dublin horse show to see the cream of the RID stock, considering most of them will be for sale :)
Plus then you can see the lines you like!

Most of the Dublin horses, and certainly those winning their classes will be five figures.

Let Janet get well and visit her. A lot of Archie youngsters and those that are started will have been done properly.

I have 2 friends both with RID by Huntingfield Rebel. Nicely put together proper ID's and with amazing attitudes and temprements

Unfortunately, I am going into hospital tomorrow for about 2 weeks - with some more time off when I get home. But feel free if you call in abot 2-3 weeks - I've got lots of the little poppets hanging around!

Get well soon Janet, I hope it won't be too long until you are back on your feet.

I've been out since Tuesday night (a week longer than it should have been as I developed a pulmonary embolus post surgery) and I feel fantastic - the best I have felt in at LEAST 5 years. The hardest (impossible) thing to do is to take things easy (I AM trying) and the only post operation side effect that worries me is I have the appetite of an Irish Draught!

Hopefully that won't go on TOO long or I'll get too heavy even for an Irish Draught!

Not just gorgeous Archie youngsters but of course lots of gorgeous Raj youngsters as well (I still miss Raj so much but he lives on all around me).

So anyone who wants an Irish Draught, I'm ready to give you an opportunity to find Mr. or Miss Wonderful.
