OMG i have just spent the whole day on my assignment and have clicked on save thought it was saved and closed it and now i cannot find it again ahhh im soo angry with myself
Have you got your software set to do regular timed backups? or version control? If so check where it's saving those files to.
If not I'm afraid it's a crap time to learn it but if you are doing an important piece of work you MUST make sure you have autosave, or whatever your program calls it, set up.
Oh heck, your not the only one to do things like that, if that helps! which it probably doesn't right now.
Have you re-opend the programme you were working on,...ie Word, clicked on file at the top left and in the drop down see if its listed on the most recently worked on items?

That makes me so cross - forget teaching kids how to tit around with pretty pictures and teach them something that will save hours of hassle, re-typing and hair pulling. GRRRRR *goes off on rants*
You are, sadly, not alone. Why the packages can be defaulted to autosave I have no idea.
1.1 Did you take the word document from your email, and the save it? If so it will be in your temporary internet files. Failing that, do a search on your computer (start: search) for everything with todays date. Good luck!

yeah thats what i thought i did
okay so where should the temporary internet files will be?
OK - to stop it happening again look at Tools, Options, Save, then check the "autorecover" button and set how frequently it does it. I go for 10 minutes unless it's something vital when I change it to every couple of minutes!
If you also check "Always save backup copy" then you will never lose all your work again!
Piece of cake to do and would have saved you so much hassle - blame the IT teachers!
On the same route Tools, Options, File Locations you will see where your machine will save the autosaved and backed up files - so you can find them again!

i know its terrible they would rather teach us something completely irrelivant to something we need
If you clicked on save but can't find it using search or recent docs- and its from a email, then it's probably in a folder called OLK4 or similar.
To find this weird and wonderful folder, find an email with an attachment (NOT the same one you were working on), click to "save as" and note the actual title of the folder (it will probably also show your assignment) - you don't need to save anything, you need to know the name of the folder.
Then go to Search (off the start menu) - and put in the name of the folder NOT the assignment. It will then come up with the folder (I've never been able to find it any other way) and your assignment should be in there.
Secondly although you can't change the default for attachments to be saved, you can save a short cut to this file in your My documents (I've done this lots as have most of my colleagues)
don't open any more files from your hotmail, until your sure it can't be recovered. Go to the run option and type this obviously replacing the username and file name with the relevant names
c:\documents and settings\[USER NAME]\Local settings\temp\[FILE NAME]
