I'm sure I am worrying unnecessarily....but could she be in foal?

Back on the 19th May I posted about being a bit shocked that my new mare and resident gelding were going at it like rabbits. Its now the 26th June and she hasnt been back in season since (she is very obvious when she is in season!). The gelding is quite 'stallioney' (maybe a rig). I know that even if he is a rig there is little likelyhood of her getting in foal but is it possible?
 
If he is a rig then I think there is the chance, so yes, it is a possibility. I think when I have my mare put is foal (deliberatley) she was scanned at about 15 days and then scanned again at 30 days so, if you are concerned then I would certainly check. Also, I would alert the 'gelding's' owner to what happened as even if he is a gelding, horses can get damaged when mating and it could mean that someone else's horse gets hurt
 
well if it makes you feel any better mine hasn't been in season for over a month - and she definiately isn't in foal! I think it's the unsettled weather.
 
My mare hasn't been in season for over a month either, and she definitely isn't in foal. Her fieldmate is the opposite and has been in season for about 4 months... The vet has been and prescribed Regumate for her.
 
Well i suppose it could be possible if he is a rig. I would get her to the vet's ASAP for a scan to confirm.

If you don't want her to be in-foal I *think* they can give her an injection to abort it, but don't quote me on that, I just know you can do it with cats and dogs and a friend's mare was injected with something as her stallion got out and covered her old mare

Are her seasons normally very regular??

Also it could be a possible that the covering could have made her think shes in-foal and it might be a phantom pregnancy. Either way get her checked out.
 
I know I'm in a different country and all, but I have the same as the others to report.....most of my mares haven't come back into season again either. Most odd.
 
Gives me hope in that other mares are not being exactly regular this year! But interesting (worrying!) that you think its possible. I think I will wait a couple more weeks and if she doesnt come into season then will get a scan done, or at least talk to the vet. Because she is new I dont know if she is normally regular in her seasons
 
I am sorry that I can't really help as to whether she would be in foal or not but I would give her another week or so and then get the vet to check her out. Or maybe give them a ring now and speak to them for advice.

As for being in season.....Ellie rarely seems to not be in season!

It might be more useful to get the boy tested to see if he's a rig? Then you, and anyone else involved, will know for the future. He probably isn't, most cases like this it's down to behaviour, not physical. And some mares are more... ahem!... encouraging than others.

You are right there Talan, 'encouraging' is a very good word for her. Poor fellow didnt stand a chance!

Do you know if your new mare has any history of being deprived of equine company for a long period of time? Mare or gelding, if they have that in their history they can display extremes of this behaviour. For example, my friend's mare had to be box rested for 9 months as a youngster, and when she was older she caused a new gelding of mine to be accused of being a rig. After she'd met a few new geldings, all of whom then started to be "rigs" as well, my friend accepted that her mare was just a trollop!
