Two weeks ago I saw some small drips of blood that I thought were coming from Rudy's penis. They were and I took him into work. Connor do a rectal and could feel Rudy's prostate. We did lab work and the bloods were normal and the urine showed blood which was to be expected. Carrie did an ultrasound on last Wednesday and the prostate is enlarged and has cystic changes. He's going to be neutered tomorrow and will have a fine needle aspirate and send it out for cytology. I'll try and get a slide for myself to look at it and see what I see. The rule outs right now are benign prostatic hyperplasia and cancer.
Thanks for letting me write this.

Hi gsd ,I went through this exact scenario last year with my st poodle,8 yrs old.He had been insistently licking his parts, then,.I was grooming him and he splashed blood drops on the table from his p*nis…we took him straight in for an ecogram and he had a large cyst in his prostate.
Vet prescribed a seven day course of tablets to chemically neuter the dog..which reduced the cyst,by lowering the testosterone levels…it worked well and did the job.
I will look the name up ( not supelorin)as I’m going back to sleep,( just been for another wee outing with schnauzer)
The tablets were about 40 euro as I recall, the drips stopped after a day,dog was” flat” for the first week, then after two weeks seemed very much quieter.I was glad I’d not gone for the full neuter as he’s such a quiet boy anyway.
I plan to have a yearly check re ecogram and he’s due again soon.

Thanks everyone.

BellaS. I'm going to ask about the medicine. It may not be available in the US but it can't hurt to ask.

The effects of the tablets lasted six months like most chemical castration meds..so probably other brands would be effective( ask vet)…
The ecoman vet said he had many cases of enlarging prostate in dogs as young as three. They were mostly bull breeds or assertive breeds..He said they lived in high arousal state so theirlevels of testosterone were higher, which caused the changes to occur in the prostate.
After a couple of days on the tablets the effects on my dog were very apparent..he was really subdued..lost his zest, but the drips also stopped…a couple of weeks later he seemed more like himself, just quieter.
Im going to do a yearly prostate check/ ecogram .He’s nine this year.

I asked our medical director about the tablets. He had never heard of them so they probably haven't approved for use in the USA.

We did some cytology in house as well as sending some out today. What we saw in house didn't look good.
