Imaginary horses

lol, I did that too!!

Still do while driving lorry. I am also riding xcountry over the hedges alongside the road.

I was talking to my yard owner about this very subject the other day, thought I was the only one but obviousley not!
I had a lovely imaginary horse called Chester and I rode him around my lovely set of homemade jumps in the back garden, talking to him and snorting and neighing for him as we went. My parents rockery made a fantastic bank to jump off.
Even now at the grand old age of 29, I find myself jumping over fallen logs in the woods much to my kids amusement!

Was talking to a friend about this the other day and we both admitted to having imaginary horses that we 'rode' and cared for when we were little as we didn't have the real thing.

Please tell me we wern't the only ones?

You are def not the only ones, my sister and I used to ride our bikes up and down the road at home, country road may i add, pretending they were ponies until we at last got our own pony.(proper bitch of a pony!!)
My daughter plays "horses" with headcollars and lead ropes, my farrier, such a sweetie, downed tools to help her load her pony for a show, and stood behind the box, swooshing her in, even thouth it was a headcollar and leadrope. He's the best!!!!!!!

All of the above plus watching The Lone Ranger sitting on a cushion on the arm of the sofa with two potato mashers tied together for stirrups !

Yes all of the above, my parents still haven't got over the embarrassment of their daughters "holding the reins" and "riding" every where.

Brilliant, love the supermarket shy!
I graduated from boring ole brooms to making my own from my dads socks [poor dad] stuffed and tied on the end of sticks, ears from glove fingers, buttons for eyes and teeny tiny bridles from string and my mums embroidery thread and brass curtain rings. Sky rocket ,the grey was a whizz at the lawns jump off! I ended up with a whole stable full lined up in my bedroom! :p

I also still have my hobby horse I've had since I was about 6. His name is Solo, he's spotty has a bridle made of orange tartan ribbon, and googly eyes, and I've had to sew both his ears back on more than once!

Oh yes, best mate & i had full riding school & competition yards set up at our respective homes (the love of bieng farm kids) & would ride the big 3 day events around the yard (muck heaps make brilliant steps/banks) we had even "married" our Idols :p.
really scary was clearing out one of the old sheds a couple of years ago & finding stuff we had written for "Karen stark & Debora Coupe" (our alter egos) was quite funny looking through it all & remembering.

still have my hobby horse too, a palamino called Biscuit who has just come out of retirement for my 3 children to have pleasure with.

My horse was big, im not sure what breed , but he was jet black. He was wild. I was the only person that could get near him. ( i think i was influenced alot by the film ' the black stallion ' )
He was great though , very talented. We won the grand national, won at hickstead several times, won every class at olympia, badminton was a breeze.
I remember falling flat on my face one day when i was showing my brother how he cantered !
Happy days.
Kx

Me too!!! We had a patio that I turned into 2 stables and swept them religiously. I had a big dapple grey imaginary horse (my parents have a photo of me standing with a bucket "feeding" it with my round it's nose) and a small pull along horse toy from when I was a toddler which was it's little companion! We also had a plastic bin for toys in the garden which I used to hang a horrible furry rug on to "groom" then I'd sit on the bin and rock backwards and forwards (it was at that point my dad decided that I could go for riding lessons).

Also guilty of circling everything I needed from the Robinsons catalogue that came with Pony magazine and building showjump courses out of bamboo canes then making my rabbit jump over them!

Yes to all of the above - but with the added embarassment of having a DogPony.
Jordan the bordercollie used to get dragged around the garden on a leap rope, made to 'go showjumping' over sofa cushions and regularly had her paws picked out with a hoofpick.
I used to ask for grooming kits and headcollars for christmas and birthday presents, and poor old Jordan even had a foal slip as her headcollar

LMAo these are brilliant.

I still jump all the hedges and walls and ditches while I am a passenger in a car :D and Kerryflower and i were just talking about this when we dropped my horse off to his new home. She jumps shadows too :D Its nice remembering what started it all off, when boring things like bills and money sometimes overtake the childish love of horses :)

Me too, to most of the above!

My imaginary horse was always a pure white Arabian.

I am so lucky and privileged to be actually living my childhood dream/fantasy - as I now have 3 white Arabians!

I used to put an old saddle on a bale of straw and ride it, I’d also put it sideways on the swing and attach reins to the uprights and ride that. I also used to pretend the cows were horses and even rode a couple. I once told someone I had 50 “piebalds” ranging from 13.2 to 15.2. They must have thought I was a kind of middle class traveller!

The only one I remember which actually had a name though was invented when my friend and I had to go on her father’s boat. We had to hang onto a rope attached to a sail at the front (please excuse my serious lack of boating knowledge!) and it would fling us around the deck. We would pretend we were hanging on to our imaginary stallion “Calypso” and we were in a Black Stallion style situation. I miss being a kid and having such a vivid imagination!

Well embarrasingly I was the horse. I spent most days on all fours trotting and cantering around the living room and landing much to my mums disgust as I went through so many pairs of trousers and tights at the knees :o

I won't admit the age I stopped doing this but it went on for far longer than it should  I was a strange child and mum and I were only talking about this a few weeks ago. The poor dog used to get 'reared' at and 'kicked' (pretending) on a regular basis as we were turned out together :D How confused must he have been being snorted and whinnied at - the shame! lol

I had a stable full of imaginary horses!

I had a hobby horse that my mum made for me when I was 5 - she was a white grey called Willow - on the true imaginary front I had Tamsin, an iron grey connemara cross mare and Blaze, a 15.2hh chestnut gelding, both of whom were amazing jumpers. I also had Majestic, a huge jet black stallion, Ginny, a loopy black tb mare, and a whole bunch of others.

I used to ride them everywhere, even in the car - I put skipping ropes around the headrests of the front seats as reins.

I also trained my gerbils to showjump courses.

I think its a good job I eventually did get a horse really :p

I also made up show jumps of garden canes etc. I had a whole imaginary riding school and club. My non horsey friends had to join the club and learn all about grooming and feeding. They still speak to me! My little pony was an orange space hopper who was better at ditches and water than high uprights:D

then I'd sit on the bin and rock backwards and forwards (it was at that point my dad decided that I could go for riding lessons). QUOTE]

LOL, My parents still didn't let me ride :( I wasn't allowed horsey magazines either, I think they thought I would grow out of it

I think my dad still rues the day he took me for my frist riding lesson aged 8. He was definitely regretting it when I was about 14 and he had to drive me to the yard all the time. At least now I can take myself and I pay for it myself!

Oh wow, like so many others, I thought it was only my family that did this! Had a ball reading everyones stories (really should be working, promised myself two minutes..oops) My Mum was brilliant, she used to trot my sister and I to the shops Monty Python style, "Mount and trot on girls!" quite mad to everyone else! My pony was brilliant white and called Dreamer, I also had a big black beastie, which no one but me could get near! Lovely memories, thanks everyone!
