immigrating to australia, have to sell horses

As another alternative to retirement livery how about one of the big sanctuaries? I'm not suggesting you are the type to unload on one, but if you donated the type of money that would pay for retirement livery/ flights the sanctuary would make some on top of costs & more if the horse was able to be loaned out. No idea if they do that type of thing, but thought it's worth mentioning. ( and I do mean a well known one such as redwings so you don't need to worry)

how much earlier? before she bought her horses? op hasn't even stated when they plan on moving!

Yeah, hindsight is a great thing. I am looking at moving around the end of the year, still have alot to sort out, including paperwork for my boxer bitch. Should have been 2, but one was taken from me by cancer in her spine suddenly. So, not having a good time of it ! Any folk down south would like e nice house with an indoor riding area, and 8 acres, please get in touch !!!!!!!!!!!!

possibility.thanks.

I think its emmigrating isn't it?

Yup, but with one "m".

Good luck, Tamba, it will be tough, but oh so doable. I moved to England from Hawaii with 15 dogs, and we all had to endure 6 months of quarantine through an English winter. No regrets whatsoever.

If you are going to correct someone, at least get it right yourself!! Doh!!!

OP, good luck in whatever you decide to do, you are clearly trying to do the best thing for all of your horses. :)

thanks folks, for all the help, advice, it is tough,
no, I didnt check the sp, as I wrote the post in a hurry, not thinking!!!!!!!!!!My heads all the over the place at the minute!

My goodness, taking 12 dogs overseas, must have cost a fair price, its 3000, to take my dog to OZ.!!

Oh boy, you are on form at the moment, you did fall out of the wrong side of your kennel didn't you? ;)

Couldnt have put it any better.:D CC what a sh**ty thing to say.

Good luck in your move, its a huge expense taking the bulk of your animals with you, and a credit to you that youre getting it all sorted for them before you go.

Thanks, so much, too.
I am heartbroke, but life is a lot tougher for people than ever b4, and just incase anyone is wondering, IRT, made clear today, after I phoned them, its 12600.00 each and not a penny less. I did my best to try and negotiate, but due to the quarantine costs there is no possibility of it being any cheaper, as AU are putting up their quarantine prices this year.
Thats what they said folks.!

That's a lot of money! And just for the record, it never crossed my mind to think poor horses, got the impression you are far from being uncaring!

Just another thought but if you are going to make more money in Oz, could you take out some of the horses and leave one behind on grass livery while you save the remainder to pay for the last one to be shipped over? sorry if it' s an idiotic thought but wondered if that would give you more leeway

well, its always possible I might have to do one thing or another, if my house doesnt sell, which I really dont know at minute with the market so sticky.

Thanks Littlelegs, X, Im glad Im not sounding like a cow, but Im trying to do the best, and already sourcing homes for them, one very good home so far offered for my broodmare Huney, So things hopefully wont be so painful. Im just being mega careful as to who they go to, thats the best I can do, with those ridiculous transport costs... I thought you would be able to hire a personal jet for that price, !

It was 15 dogs, and it was a very pretty penny! There was no way I could leave them...some were old, several were epileptic, and they were a very important part of my family. I was able to see them for 2 hours everyday, which was a great help.

I'm sorry, but i think you're mad. When I returned from the US I brought one horse home with me. It cost a fortune, he got very sick on the flight and was utterly stressed by the move (I bred him in the US, and he had to adjust to different, feed, grazing, climate, flies, everything). In hindsight it would have been kinder to find him a good home there and not put him through the trauma of such a drastic move. Cheaper too!

I run a retirement home, we have 3 owners that live in Sydney, they didn't want to take their horses out to Oz as they are elderly and didn't think they would survive the change of climate and travel .

This is interesting. However I just wonder if you are the exception, as I know quite a few people who have taken their horses with them very successfully too.
Was this a long time ago, I know that travel and quarantine, is much more common for horses to australia, and many many people take them.

I dont have any retired horses?, So Im not taking anything retired. Yes, my big lad has lameness but he is healthy and a happy camper, whos had a very cushy life with me.
