Our working cocker has recently been diagnosed with this and is currently on a course of steroids to try to boost her red blood cell production.

Does anyone have any experience of this disease - positive or otherwise?

I've been googling and alarming myself!

I have some experience of animals with this (work in a vets).
Unfortunately not much is known about what causes IMHA or why. In the initial stages the prognosis is very guarded because of this. Some patients do well with steroids and regular monitoring, if their blood count becomes too low they will need a blood transfusion, or multiple transfusions. I know of a few dogs that have done ok, come in for regular blood samples to make sure they are ok. However out of the few I have known probably half have been euthanised in the end. These were the very sick ones who had to be sent to the huge referral centre for critical care and blood transfusions.

My friends dog has just died of this and she has given her dogs body to research to help vets try to understand more about the disease.

Sorry for your dogs diagnosis, I hope your dog is one of the luckier ones :(
