imovie help

does anyone use imovie ?
as my wmm has packed up and so i went on my mates imovie and got rather confused

it took a hour to figure out i needed to put the pics on to iphoto first of my memory stick lol
i could find the transitions but not any effects (slow mo grey scale etc) dont know if the even exist on there

but any help welcome

i use imovie for all my youtube vids, to get on to effects you go on editing then on video FX and theyre all listed there.
