Hi Newbie here have tb mare who over past week has been having episodes of impaction plus one episode of spasmodic colic .

She is currently in the equine hospital and has had a course of epsom salts and liquid parafin 3 times . Stools are still impacted and hopefully softening from the last examination today .

No feed since wednesday and although had bran thursday morning .

Now at the present minute shes been on no pain relief, had the drip on saturday and hasn't pooed but is currently not colicing but showing some slight signs of uncomfortness . She was on haylage but now changing to hay .

Advice on feeding regime and other experiences most welcome .

Lee .

Many thanks

My mare had impaction colic in Jan 2009, itis very worrying after three days on a drip and rubbing her catheter out and blood everywhere she was fine. Until the drip has worked and she has passed feaces it is best not to feed her anything. The small (handfuls) of haylage or soaked hay. Hard feed will need to be sloppy and the back out onto grass. It does depend on what has caused the colic in teh frist place. Best advice will come from your vet. Hope she is feeling better soon.

Hi

My mare currently suffering too - foaled last Thursday morning, and has seemed fine, but was showing spasmodic colic symptoms yesterday morning, which appeared to ease over the course of the day. She then was uncomfortable again yesterday evening, and a rectal exam indicated she's slightly impacted too. She's passed droppings over the course of the day, but not as many as usual...

Interestingly, my vet stomach tubed fluid and electrolytes, and gave her finadyne and buscopan. She then had me turn her out over night to keep her moving, and give her as much sloppy wet feed as she would eat... She does look much brighter this morning, so am really hoping that it's done the trick.

Unfortunately, vet actually found a fairly serious heart mumour too... I've had her since a baby, so have never listened to it! Grade 4 when stressed, but virtually inaudible when she's resting....

Never rains but it pours :-(
