Implications of a sat/sun helper.

Im thinking about maybe getting someone in on the weekends to help out.

My horses live out 24/7, but the fields need poo picking and tack needs cleaning, and they could also do with a groom.

So thought it'd be a nice little job for someone to do as sat and/or sunday mornings to help me out a bit, my available time seems to be getting smaller.

Now i was thinking this is probably suitable for someone at school (14/15yr old), as thats what i had to do at that age.

Just wondered if anyone else has someone come in and help them with stuff like this, and pay etc.

Both my horses are fully insured so think i might be covered that way.

instead of paying helper, any way than can 'earn a ride'

therefore they are more willing to poo pick ect rather then getting paid... i always found rides a better incentive. of course if this isnt possible
 
i thought about this as a possibilty, but did wonder where i'd stand if something happenned, as my 12hh is still really green, and my cob i'd rather not let other people ride, as want someones help so i can ride him.
 
14/15 yeR olds get a work permit! so you are liable(or need employers liability) and need to pay minimum wage. you cant swap ride for work! as payment in kind! fine til something goes wrong then you are up to your neck in the deep proverbial!!
 
I helped at my yard doing this type of work, then got paid to work from 7:30am till 5pm on a Saturday when one of the weekend staff left. I got paid £42.50 for the day with a morning break and an hour for lunch, which i'm sure for a 17 yr old was above the minimum wage!
 
well i was going to offer £4 an hour, just looked and thats fine for anyone up to 18yrs old.

now just need to know about this liabilty insurance, cant find any quotes online to get an approx amount.
 
When I was 13 I helped out with a lady who had M&M show ponies (not getting paid, just for the fun of accompanying her to shows in her massive lorry

) and a couple of years later I got a Saturday job mucking out on a livery yard for a few quid per hour. I never thought of anything like insurance or minimum wage, I was just happy to be around horses! I'm sure there are loads of young girls who'd jump at the chance just like I did.
 
How about a "token" system like when I first started working at a riding school aged 12 - you got one token per day and it was 4 tokens for an hours group lesson. However the RS owner would only give out 4 tokens per Saturday, when me and a friend started we made helpers 4 and 5 so had to rotate our tokens once every 2 weeks! So that was 8 days hard graft for an £8 lesson, £1 per day (no wonder I thought all my Christmas's had come at once when I was promoted to head helper and paid £5 per day in cash!) - you learn a lot from scary ladies called Dallas!!!

Seems quite sad when you have to consider liability cover for poo picking but probably best to cover your back these days. FWIW I used to help out with someone's horses riding and a bit of mucking out and they paid me cash in hand and I was covered by their horse insurence for the riding etc. I have no idea how her paying me may have affected anything but we never gave it a second thought (at least I didn't!).
 
mistral shining.... at the end of your sig you say you are a freelance groom. surely you know and have commercial liability and 3 c liability if working as a freelance groom? doubt this will also cover employers liability!!
