How important are vaccinations to horses? If you had a yard of 10 horses and only 9 were vaccinated upto date would there be any risks. We are talking a livery yard where of course horses come and go. How high is the risk of the unvaccinated horse catching something and passing it on to others? Thankies

we had equine flu on our yard last year and the horses that had had there vaccs in the past or were up to date with them never got any symptoms but all the others got it, some mildly and others worse, we started off isolating the poorly ones but it spread anyway. hope that helps!

Most livery yards won't even accept horses on to the premises without proof of vaccination. I'm not sure why someone would be careless enough not to vaccinate their horse...

I fail to understand why so many people fail to even vaccinate against tetanus

the post isnt about whether or not people vacc their horses its about how worthwhile and important it is to do it, its personal opinion that differs and people shouldnt be made to feel guilty or stupid if they choose not to have their horses vaccinated.

No offence LittleTinker but I think people SHOULD be made to feel guilty for not even vaccinating against tetanus - the horses who die from it do so in a horrific way... If it can be avoided, why on earth would a person risk it?!

With regards to the question - I dont think the unvaccinated horse would pass on anything to the others, since they are the ones vaccinated. The only one Id be worried about IS the unvac one. I thought yards did require up to date vaccs anyway, and obviously you couldnt compete if you dont.

I stopped vaccinating AmyMay after she finished hunting. Funnily enough she never dropped down dead.

Thumper is only vaccinated because of Riding Club activities.

Nothing apart from the competition horses or show horses are vaccinated where I stable my horse.

They are all in fine fettle, alive, kicking and certainly very well.
