I have never traveled a foal that far but have traveled 3/4 year olds, it is a long journey for them. you need to have a vet check them 24/48 hours before travel to state they are fit and well. Will you be using a transport company or transporting them yourself? transport companies usually organise paperwork etc so is best to speak to them.
Talk to the vendors of the foal and see if the foal has recovered from the weaning mentally as well as being fit to travel. Keep costs in Germany are lower that UK so it might pay to keep the foal longer in Germany.
It is a long journey but i have had horses from germany using johannsmann as well as other transporters and i would use them again and again. the service is second to none. i thnk none of mine took over 36-48 hours. they are a bit more expensive than some of the others i have used but my horses comfort was most important.

I always use Johannsmann too, they have bought over lots of mares for me and they are excellent, joyrney is as you say between 36 and 48hours max. Their lorries are very good too!
We also always use Johannsmann now - the last one who came back to us from near Bremen took 15 hours door to door & he was as fresh as a daisy when he arrived.
In the past I used a UK transporter to send a weanling over to Germany & despite being assured he would be the first drop, it took 3 very long days to get him there & he was very weary when he arrived.
The foal will have to have export health papers completed by a Ministry vet as fit to travel & will also need his passport to accompany him.
Some of the studbooks take several weeks after branding to send out their passports ( they have to wait for the DNA results), so you might need to jolly them along a bit!!
Just moved over from France, with my mare & filly yearling I thought it was very easy. Used Skye Transport fantastic Lorry & the guy who collected was great with my horses, if I moved abroad again & would have him again, help with all the paperwork etc.
