Does anyone have any experience on importing connemara ponies from ireland?
I'm looking for a project to bring on for the summer as mine is out of action until probably next year. I'd ideally like to find a very cheap connie, maybe unbroken, to do some work on over the summer. Unless anyone knows of any potential projects in the UK?

I have 3 connemara ponies that I bought in Ireland - 2 we brought back home with us in August 2011, and last summer we went back to buy the younger brother of one of them and had him shipped back. They are fabulous ponies and were incredibly cheap compared to the prices over here! They were each just 4 when we got them - 1 had jumped a bit, the other two were barely started.

Many thanks.
Can I ask what kind of prices we are talking for a just broken 4 year old? PM me if you wish.

I bought connemara from Ireland last year - a 4 yr old. I used an agent though, so probably a bit more than hat LCH611 paid but she knows tonnes of breeders/prodcuers etc and she went round and tried them all out and videoed them etc. She was alsp present for the vetting/xrays etc and oganised the travellng.

Price wise, once I had factored in the agents fees, transport etc it as roughly what I would have paid for a connemara if I managed to find one locally. When I was looking (last May) there werent many 4 yr old class 1 geldings, and the ones that were available were miles away so would have cost a fortune to go up and try/vet/transport home etc.

There are 101 choices; I had a choice from about 6 after a week ofher looking and our pny wasvetted the next week so was really quick.

If you want a cheaper pony, then definitely get one from a breeder just turned 4. They will be backing them now so you need to get one that hasnt been backed if you want to maximise your return. However I dont think you will make a huge profit on any of them unless you can turn them around quickly as the breeders know when they have a good jumping pony and those will sell for loads at the sales.

Thank you. I'm not after making a huge profit at all. I'd probably be happy just getting my money back in all fairness. I just need something to keep me occupied this summer and will need to sell it before winter.

They have a connie sale at Gorsebridge in Ireland if that's of any intrest to you?

We picked a lovely oversized 4 yr old mare up at the sports horse sale, schooled and jumping. I'm guessing because she's to big the breeder moved her on and that seems to be her only fault.

Brilliant. Thanks.
Unfortunately I think I may have missed the Goresbridge sales as I believe that was on last weekend. Unless the monthly normal sales are worth attending?
