Importing semen

I'm looking at the possibilities of importing frozen semen from a particular stallion in America. As this is a new venture both for the owner and myself, I wonder if anyone who has already done this can advise on the requirements both to export from America and to import to Britain. Of course, in the end this may prove too impractical or expensive for one or other of us; but I'd like to know the possibilities and options.

The shipping costs wont be cheap apart from the flight costs you would need to hire or purchase a dry shipper.

The other main expense will be for the stallion owner who will have to get him to fulfil the health requirements for semen collection in the USA that satisfy DEFRA.

There will be details on their website......somewhere, or you could get the owner to contact Select Breeders Services or another freezing centre in the US & they will tell you what the requirements & charges would be for collection & freezing.

It would probaby be most cost effective if you imported enough for several mares & acted as an agent for them over here, maybe?

May I be exceptionally nosey and ask which stallion? The reason I ask is that there is/was a dressage stallion out there that I was very interested in, but for the life of me I cannot remember his name

He was a son of Burggraaf..............

Thankyou all for pointing me in the right direction; and no, I'm afraid he's not by Burggraaf! I'm loth to say who he is just yet as that will necessarily turn into a discussion and critique of the stallion; the owner is a small breeder whose horses are her friends; she may not be prepared for that just yet. I'm also waiting for more information myself, to confirm my choice.
As Sambertino suggested, we did discuss my buying extra semen to sell on, to offset costs; has anyone had experience of doing this? Under those circumstances he'd need to be advertised properly, of course; no squint 3-legged headless shots that put you off despite yourself; another reason to keep mum until I've checked there aren't any of those on the internet to be googled.
Any more info about this Burggraaf boy? We might be able to track him down.
