Hi all can anyone recommend a chaff that is both alfa & molasses free. Pony is allergic to alfa comes out in hives & is a very good doer so dont want molasses due to lammy risk.

I have been looking into this too as i have one allergic to Alf-alfa and I have found that Honeychop do a plain chopped oat straw chaff with nothing added to it

Not sure why you need chaff but if you're looking for just plain hay or straw it may well be easier to make your own, a B&Q garden shredder does lovely chaff cutting, then you can get just the mix of plain hay/ straw that you'd like.

A bale of oat straw would only be about £3 and would make lots and lots of sacks of chaff.

Thanks guys my feed mill stocks both honey chop & halleys so will see if ponio will eat either of them & take it from there.

Make sure the Honeychop is the unmollassed as they do a mollassed one as well and my feed store accidently ordered this for me the first time I requested it. It is the size of a bale of shavings and looks very like one of the straw beddings you can get.

Is it a lami pony, or just want you'd like to prevent it in, in the first place?

I like D&H Safe & Sound. Has a tiny bit of molasses in but no alfalfa. I fed it as last horse was allergic to alfalfa. S&S smells lovely, it's a really nice chaff. I'm currently feeding Happy Hoof (I couldn't get S&S) but it's pretty horrible, very sweet and sticky, and doesn't smell fresh in the slightest. Pony only gets a handful but once it's gone, I will go back to S&S.

Hi Chestnut cob pony hasnt had lammy in 7yrs ive had her. I got her at 6mths. She has been kept on 1/2 hay 1/2 straw soaked and dengie hifi lite and a vit an min supplement. Ive never had problem until recently when she came out in hives and its been narrowed downo alfa was just lookin for tried and tested alternative from fellow hhs. Thanks guys am def on case of honey chop straw or the halleys timothy chop

This. We do the same. Saves a fortune.

It can be a pain to find so have to drive to the big feed shop but I either use cheap hay chaff from haysoft or simple systems timothy hay chop which is a bit expensive but a big bag :-) I don't have the time or space or inclination to make chaff!

Takes hardly any space (you could do this in the garden shed) and 10 minutes a week to make

Small bales of oat straw can be hard to source in many areas and people may not have storage for any larger quantities so may not be an option.

However it is a good option if it is feasible - tho I don't bother chopping mine.
