I was out hunting once back in the 60's and it was one of those days when there was just no scent. Having drawn a blank at one covert we were going back across a field and as hounds passed over a patch of land a fox got up from the middle of them and trotted off in the opposite direction. Much amusement and we all just kept going.

Wow wow wow, my minihound would have been gone before we got even close to it, I might have managed to keep my spaniel if it didn't bound, but a whole pack of hounds ? I'm in awe!

But that’s exactly the control hunts should have over their hounds. Having been out once when hounds rioted on sheep and huntsman had no control it just shows what should be done by people who know the job.

You are right and in fact it is the level of control that can and does exist but not without exception sadly. If all hunts were able to work to this standard they would have a better chance of surviving the current crisis. We have had sheep join the hounds I go out with - for some reason some sheep find that very entertaining but are totally ignored by hounds!

This (in the video) is exactly the level of trust and discipline that can be achieved though - whatever you want to say about hunting, in terms of dog/hound training this is really impressive I think and shows what can be and is entirely possible.

Great example for anyone interested in distraction training!

ETA - great to see the huntsman is also filming his work as that is a vital part of any trust building that is to go on. Good man!!

Shouldn't be impressive ( though it is) it should be the norm!!

I have seen this level of control very often in 'normal' situations though this pack is particularly 'traditional' in that you could almost throw a sheet over them and cover every hound. What is impressive about this though is the fact that hounds totally ignore the deer which is putting itself right into the middle of a bunch of predators. I was delighted to see the huntsman had his camera on.

For anyone with more than one dog/hound, regardless, this is a great level of trust and self discipline demonstrated and I think there are few pet owners whose multiple dogs would be so steady under such circumstances. Would that we could all train to that standard...
