Hi all - I have a 24yr old cob who had major surgery during November of last year. He came out of it really well, and apart from a very short infection in the wound which quickly cleared with support, has continued to get back to normal. However, I have noticed that he has lost muscle mass around his stifles and shoulders. He has always been a gannet, so a chunky boy, and in fact his weight is relatively normal on the weigh tape. I realise, though I am trying to pretend that it is isn't happening, that he is getting older, and of course we have had a naff winter, so these may explain the loss of muscle, but he did have around 10-12 weeks in which we could do virtually nothing. I am concerned that if I don't do something about this it will be difficult to restore due to his age. Of course, as (or if!!) the weather gets better we will gradually get back to our usual summer work of four to five hacks per week, and hopefully that will help. But is there anything I can give him which will support him? He is currently on chaff, mix, speedibeet, soya oil, glucosamine, cider vinegar, and root veg. at night with ad lib hay (in over night), and chaff, mix and beet for breakfast. He is out for around 9 hours but, along with most people, we do not have laods of great grass at present.
Sorry this is long - you can have my golden chocolate Easter bunny (which I have been saving!!!) if you have any ideas???

Firstly remember an old horse is no different to an old person. Age and illness/injury takes it toll.

If you can stretch to the cost, Equitop Myoplast is excellent stuff, and combined with walking out for increasing amounts of time and gentle hill work will help the old horse regain some strength and muscle tone.

Thank you, Adorable Alice, I will have a look at that. Does anyone else have any other suggestions? Janah, what is your horse's situation?

Agree with AA. That is what the vet gave my pony after her surgery when she was 21. There is no point starting it before he is in work though as obviously you need work to develop muscle as well as amino acids. If I recall correctly if you go on their website you can get a £15 off voucher to give your vet (who you have to buy it off, it's prescription only).
Also micronised linseed.

Hi thanks Unbalanced, am looking both of these. Anybody any experience/success with herbal mixes from Hack Up?
