Hi all - I have a 24yr old cob who had major surgery during November of last year. He came out of it really well, and apart from a very short infection in the wound which quickly cleared with support, has continued to get back to normal. However, I have noticed that he has lost muscle mass around his stifles and shoulders. He has always been a gannet, so a chunky boy, and in fact his weight is relatively normal on the weigh tape. I realise, though I am trying to pretend that it is isn't happening, that he is getting older, and of course we have had a naff winter, so these may explain the loss of muscle, but he did have around 10-12 weeks in which we could do virtually nothing. I am concerned that if I don't do something about this it will be difficult to restore due to his age. Of course, as (or if!!) the weather gets better we will gradually get back to our usual summer work of four to five hacks per week, and hopefully that will help. But is there anything I can give him which will support him? He is currently on chaff, mix, speedibeet, soya oil, glucosamine, cider vinegar, and root veg. at night with ad lib hay (in over night), and chaff, mix and beet for breakfast. He is out for around 9 hours but, along with most people, we do not have laods of great grass at present.
Sorry this is long - you can have my golden chocolate Easter bunny (which I have been saving!!!) if you have any ideas???
