Improving jumping technique: lazy with front legs

Does anyone have any ideas for improving jumping technique; my horse seems to be a little lazy with his front legs- he doesn't pick them up very high and seems to go over a jump shoulder first sometimes!

It only causes us a problem when he gets in a little tight to a show jump, most of the time he gives it plenty of height and clears it.
He also does the same over XC fences! (Even though he's very keen to jump and pulling me forwards)

I've used heavy poles a few times but doesn't make much difference. What about putting a V bar infront of the jump?

Any ideas appreciated!

Try bounce cross poles of increasing height, but be careful not to overdo it as it is a tiring exercise.

Also wide low oxers helps them make a nice shape over a fence.

I personally wouldn't use heavy poles, it's all about technique.

high cross poles will encourage a horse to 'snap up' in front. also 'v' poles up towards the top pole of a vertical or oxer will help encourage the horse to bring its front legs up quicker. also, a pole placed diagonally across the front and back rail of an oxer can encourage a horse to make a nice shape.

lots of grid work and bounces will also help
