Down the longside-Shoulder in 3 strides, turn off to do a 10m circle, straight into canter, back into trot before getting to the end of the circle, straight into shoulder in 3 strides, then 10m canter circle again, then back into the shoulder in in trot again.. carry on in like this till you get to the end of the longside, then hopefully by the time that the horse is on the short side you can really collect the trot, and ask for medium down the next long side...
I ask for medium not with the legs, but by pulling my stomach and the back into the spine but with more weight into the stomach without letting the spine curve. If that makes sense! I find that if you use the back and the stomach rather than the legs to ask for medium, then they can come through more from behind. If you read books by Mary Wanless this explains this more.

I can imagine !!! it would also really help mine's canter work as he tends to run slightly xzx
I always find a few strides of shoulder fore (or shoulder in if they're established) then riding straight and asking for the medium trot is very effective as it gets the inside hind active
I normally start mine off doing medium trot by doing it out hacking and trotting up a hill. Makes them push from behind and not go on the forehand without the "pressure" of being in the school and thinking they can just whizz off faster.
