I struggle to get any enthusiasm out my horse when we are going away from home on a hack. Given the chance, he would stop, turn around and go back home again. He is slightly better in company, but still not great.
I do carry a short crop with me as I hate nagging him with my legs.
On our way back he strides out beautifully (without jogging or rushing).
How can I encourage him to stride out going away from home? Should I always trot as soon as we leave the yard to get some impulsion out of him?
